The Utah gubernatorial and lieutenant gubernatorial election took place on November 6, 2012. Declarations of candidacy were due to the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Utah by March 16, 2012. Candidates paid a $536 filing fee, and minor party and independent candidates additionally had to turn in 1,000 signatures. Write-in candidacies had to be declared no later than 30 days before the election.

Constitution Party Kirk Pearson and Tim Alders (Con)

In Utah, candidates for the two major parties are selected at statewide party conventions, with a primary election occurring only in the event that a candidate does not receive at least 60% of the convention delegate vote. Third-party candidates were nominated during a traditional primary election, which was held on June 26, 2012.

Incumbent Gary Herbert and his running mate Greg Bell were re-elected on November 6, 2012. They defeated Democratic candidates Peter Cooke and Vince Rampton, as well as two pairs of third-party challengers, securing over 68% of the total vote.[1]

In July 2011, polls showed that Herbert was likely to be re-elected unless he faced a challenge from Congressman Jim Matheson.[2] Matheson, though, opted to run for Congress in Utah's newly created 4th District, which he ultimately won. At the statewide Republican Party nominating convention in late April, Herbert captured 63% of the Republican delegates, beating out five other candidates for his party's nomination.[3] At the Democratic Party's convention, Peter Cooke and his running mate Vince Rampton were unopposed and won their party's nod.[3]

In Utah, while the Democratic and Republican parties select their gubernatorial and lieutenant gubernatorial candidates at their statewide conventions, third-party candidates are chosen through the primary elections. The two pairs of major party candidates were met in November's general election by Libertarian Party candidate Ken Larsen and his running mate Rob Latham, along with Kirk Pearson of the Constitution Party, who defeated Brandon Nay in the June 26 primary, and Pearson's running mate Tim Alders.
