State executive official elections in 2012 |
The North Carolina lieutenant gubernatorial election took place on November 6, 2012. The primary election was held on May 8, 2012, and a primary runoff for the Republican nomination was held on July 17, 2012.
The state's lieutenant governor, Walter Dalton, announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for governor after incumbent governor Beverly Perdue announced she would not seek a second term in office.
In the Democratic primary election, Linda Coleman defeated freshman state Senator Eric Mansfield. Five Republican candidates filed to run, and architect Dan Forest finished first in the May 8th primary. Since Forest did not receive more than 40% of the vote, he and the second place finisher, Wake County Commissioner Tony Gurley, had to face off in a primary runoff on July 17th.[1] Forest defeated Gurley on July 17 and went on to face Coleman in November.[2]
Forest defeated Coleman in the November 6, 2012, general election.[3][4]
