Important voting information

  • Florida uses a closed primary system, meaning voters must register with a party to be able to vote in their primary election.
  • Registration forms must be filled out at least 29 days prior to the election you wish to vote in.
  • On May 15, 2015, Governor Rick Scott (R) signed into law SB 228, which authorized the creation of an online voter registration system in Florida. The legislation was passed by significant majorities in both chambers of the Florida State Legislature: 109-9 in the Florida House of Representatives and 37-3 in the Florida State Senate. The enacted legislation required the voter registration system to be up and running by October 2017.[7][8]

Florida ranked 25th out of the 50 states and District of Columbia in the Pew Charitable Trusts' Elections Performance Index (EPI), based on the 2012 elections. The EPI examined election administration performance and assigned an average percentage score based on 17 indicators of election performance. These indicators were chosen in order to determine both the convenience and integrity of these three phases of an election: registration, voting and counting. Florida received an overall score of 65 percent.[9]
