Clay Ford (September 24, 1938 – March 18, 2013) was a Republican member of the Florida House of Representatives, representing District 2 from 2006 to 2013. Ford died while serving in office on March 18, 2013, after a battle with cancer.[1] He previously served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1975 to 1976.

Ford was mayor pro tempore for the City of Gulf Breeze from 2000 to 2007 and served on the Gulf Breeze City Council from 1990 to 2007.

Ford's professional experience included working as an attorney. He served in the Army Reserve National Guard from 1955 to 1988.

He was a member of the American Legion and a life member of the National Rifle Association.[2]

Issues

Ford provided answers to the Florida State Legislative Election 2008 Political Courage Test. The test informs voters how a candidate would vote on the issues if elected. When asked his legislative priorities, he responded:

"My top two priorities for the next decade are adequate funding for health care and energy. A close third is education directed toward specific training to produce a workforce that will attract and retain jobs in Northwest Florida by linking our education institutions to the recruitment efforts directed toward employers. Incentives must be incremented to the number of jobs, salary levels and stability of the employment."[3]

Ford's sponsored legislation includes:

  • HB 339 - "Criminal Offenses: Provides for reclassification of offenses committed against elderly or disabled; provides for mandatory term of imprisonment for certain thefts against persons 65 years of age or older; provides for mandatory term of imprisonment for certain acts of exploitation against elderly person or disabled adult."
  • HB 993 - "Airline Travel: Requires airline that cancels or delays flight more than 1 hour to honor passenger's ticket at later date or reimburse cost plus penalty fee except under certain conditions"
  • HB 1003 - "Insurance: Designates act "John and Patricia Seibel Act;" provides specified continuing education requirements for persons licensed to solicit or sell life insurance; provides for administrative fines & criminal penalties for offenses involving misleading representations or fraudulent comparisons or omissions, generating unlawful fees & commissions, or using fraudulent signatures"

Ford won election in the 2012 election for Florida House of Representatives District 2. Ford defeated Jeremy M. Bosso in the Republican primary on August 14, 2012, and defeated Christine M. Bruha (I) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[4]

Ford won re-election to the 3rd District seat in 2010. He had no primary opposition. Ford defeated Claudia Brown-Curry (D) in the November 2 general election.[5]

2008

On November 4, 2008, Ford won re-election to the Florida House of Representatives from Florida's 3rd District, defeating Lumon May (D). Ford received 33,504 votes in the election while May received 30,751 votes.[6] Ford raised $280,198 for his campaign; May raised $96,977.[7]
