South Dakota State Senate elections, 2014
The general elections for the office of South Dakota State Senate took place on November 4, 2014. A primary election took place on June 3, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 25, 2014.
Following the general election, there was no change to the majority control of the South Dakota State Senate. Majority control of the chamber was held by the Republican Party, which saw a net loss of one seat following the general election. Their total seats shifted from 28 to 27. The Democratic Party picked up the seat, increasing their holdings from seven to eight.

Competitiveness
Candidates unopposed by a major party
In 17 (48.6%) of the 35 districts up for election in 2014, there was only one major party candidate running for election. A total of 12 Republicans and 5 Democrats were guaranteed election barring unforeseen circumstances.
Two major party candidates faced off in the general election in 18 (51.4%) of the 35 districts up for election.
Competitive
- District 2: Incumbent Chuck Welke (D) was defeated by Brock Greenfield (R) in the general election. Welke won the general election by a margin of victory of 3 percent in 2012.
- District 17: Michelle Maloney (D) was defeated by Arthur Rusch (R) in the general election. Incumbent Tom Jones won the general election by a margin of victory of 5 percent in 2012.
- District 25: Incumbent Timothy Rave (R) defeated Bill Laird (D) in the general election. Rave won the general election by a margin of victory of 2 percent in 2012.
Mildly competitive
- District 3: David Novstrup (R) defeated Mark Remily (D) in the general election. Incumbent Al Novstrup (R) won the general election by a margin of victory of 7 percent in 2012.
- District 7: Incumbent Larry Tidemann (R) defeated Jay Vanduch (D) in the general election. Tidemann won the general election by a margin of victory of 7 percent in 2012.
- District 15: Incumbent Angie Buhl (D) was unopposed in the general election. Buhl won the general election by a margin of victory of 10 percent in 2012.
- District 22: Incumbent Jim White (R) defeated Darrell Raschke (D) in the general election. White won the general election by a margin of victory of 9 percent in 2012.
- District 26: Troy Heinert (D) defeated John Koskan (R) in the general election. Incumbent Larry J. Lucas (D) won the general election by a margin of victory of 6 percent in 2012.
Primary challenges
A total of two incumbents faced primary competition on June 3. Nine incumbents did not seek re-election in 2014 and another 24 incumbents advanced past the primary without opposition. The state senators that faced primary competition included:
- District 24: Incumbent Jeff Monroe defeated Tad Perry in the Republican primary.
- District 33: Incumbent Phil Jensen defeated David Johnson in the Republican primary.
Retiring incumbents

Qualifications
To be eligible to serve in the South Dakota Senate, a candidate must be:[1]
- A U.S. citizen at the time of filing
- 21 years old at the filing deadline time
- A two-year resident of South Dakota at the filing deadline time
- May not have been convicted of bribery, perjury or other infamous crime; may not have illegally taken "public moneys"
- A qualified voter. A qualified voter is someone who is:
- * A U.S. citizen
- * Reside in South Dakota
- * At least 18 years old old on or before the next election
- * Not currently serving a sentence for a felony conviction which included imprisonment, served or suspended, in an adult penitentiary system
- * Not be judged mentally incompetent by a court of law
- * Not have served 4 consecutive terms
