Brian Kalk
Brian Kalk is a former Republican member of the North Dakota Public Services Commission. He was first elected to the commission in November 2008 and won re-election in 2014. He resigned in January 2017 to accept a position with the Energy and Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota.[1][2][3]
Biography
Kalk was born and raised in Bottineau, North Dakota. Three years after he graduated from Bottineau High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served as a communications non-commissioned officer and deployed in both Desert Shield and Desert Storm. While serving, Kalk earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Campbell University in North Carolina, and was selected to attend Officers Candidate School, after which he was commissioned and became a logistics officer.
In June 1999, Kalk was selected to participate in the Marine Corps Advanced Degree Program, returned to North Dakota, and earned a master's degree in environmental engineering from North Dakota State University. He returned to military service after graduating and worked for two years as the base environmental compliance officer at Camp Pendleton, during which time he deployed to both Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
In 2003, he again returned to North Dakota to assume command of the Fargo Military Entrance Processing Station until his retirement. During that time, he earned a doctorate in natural resource management from North Dakota State University. After his retirement, Kalk was hired by the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute at NDSU, where he taught courses in political science, transportation and logistics, and natural resource management.[2]

North Dakota Public Service Commission (2009-2017)
Kalk was first elected to the North Dakota Public Services Commission in 2008 and served as the commission's chairman until 2014. He was re-elected in 2014, but resigned in January 2017 to accept a position with the Energy and Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota.[3]

Kalk ran for re-election to the office of North Dakota Public Service Commissioner. Kalk won the Republican nomination in the unopposed primary on June 10. The general election took place on November 4, 2014.[1]

2012
Kalk ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing North Dakota At-large district.[4] He was defeated by Kevin Cramer in the Republican primary on June 12, 2012. The general election was November 6, 2012.[5]
According to the Washington Post, North Dakota was a battleground district in 2012, with incumbent Rick Berg running for Senate and Republicans duking it out in the primary. Democrat Pam Gulleson vastly outraised the Republican candidates, and had a "fighting chance" in a conservative state.[6][7]
