Primary preview: Alabama state executive elections, 2014
June 3, 2014
Montgomery, Alabama: Nine state executive positions are up for election in 2014 in the state of Alabama: governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, state treasurer, state auditor, commissioner of agriculture and industries and two seats on the public service commission.[1]
Seven of the nine incumbents are seeking re-election, including Governor Robert Bentley (R), Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey (R), Attorney General Luther Strange (R), Treasurer Young Boozer (R), Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries, John McMillan (R) in addition to two Public Service Commissioners, Jeremy Oden (Place 1) and Terry Dunn (Place 2).
The two exceptions are state auditor Samantha Shaw, who has reached her term-limit, and secretary of state Jim Bennett, who was appointed last summer to serve out the remainder of resigned secretary Beth Chapman's term with the understanding that he would not pursue election to a full term in 2014.
On June 3, voters will nominate candidates from seven contested primary fields - six Republican and one Democratic - to send to the November 4 general election.[2][3] The primary runoff scheduled, if necessary, for July 15, 2014.
Republican primaries will take place for the offices of governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state auditor, and both seats up for election on the public service commission; A single contested Democratic primary will be held to determine who will represent the party in the governor's race this November, likely to square off with GOP incumbent Robert Bentley.
A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Alabama uses an open primary system, in which registered voters do not have to be members of a party to vote in that party's primary.[4][5][6]

This seat is open in 2014 due to the terms of current incumbent Jim Bennett's appointment by Gov. Bentley in July 2013. Bentley was to serve out the remainder of former Secretary Beth Chapman's second term after Chapman resigned to take a job in the private sector. Having held the office in an official elected capacity in the past, Bennett returned to his old post knowing that he would have to leave it again on January 19, 2015, when Chapman's term was set to expire.[8]
