The mission statement of the Utah State Office of Education reads:[1]

Mission: To open doors of opportunity for all Utah children.[2]

Superintendent

The current Utah Superintendent of Public Instruction is Sydnee Dickson (nonpartisan). Dickson assumed office in 2016.

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education consists of 15 elected members. Members are elected by geographic district to staggered four-year terms. Candidates for the Utah State Board of Election are elected through partisan elections. Republican candidates are chosen by caucus, convention, or by collecting enough signatures to appear on a primary ballot, while Democratic candidates go through the primary election process. The Republican and Democratic candidates who win their respective primaries, along with any minor-party candidates, are elected to office during the general election in November every two years.[3] Board members are responsible for appointing the Superintendent of Public Instruction, establishing K-12 graduation standards and coordinating with the Utah State Auditor on reviews of district performance.[4]
