Structure
Mission
The mission statement of the West Virginia Department of Education reads:[1]
“ | The West Virginia Board of Education and State Superintendent of Schools work in concert to establish policies and procedures to assure implementation of West Virginia’s Public Education goals and to ensure the general supervision, oversight and monitoring of a thorough, efficient and effective system of free public schools[2] | ” |
Superintendent
The current West Virginia Superintendent of Schools is Michele Blatt (nonpartisan). Blatt assumed office in 2023.
State Board of Education
The State Board of Education consists of nine members. It also includes three non-voting members. The Governor appoints nine lay citizens to nine-year terms as voting members. The Superintendent of Schools, the chancellor of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and the chancellor of Community and Technical College Education serve as non-voting members. State law requires that the board have no more than five members from a single party on the board at the same time. The board is responsible for overseeing policies at the state's K-12 schools as well as the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind.[3]
