Structure

Mission

The mission statement of the Kentucky Department of Education reads:[1]

To partner with districts, schools, families, students, business and industry, and communities to provide leadership and support to ensure success for each and every student.[2]

Superintendent

The current Kentucky Commissioner of Education is Robbie Fletcher (nonpartisan). Fletcher assumed office in 2024.

State Board of Education

The Kentucky State Board of Education is responsible for developing and adopting regulations for the state's school districts. The board consists of 15 members, 11 of which are voting members appointed by the governor. Seven members represent the Supreme Court districts and four are at-large members. Members serve four-year terms. According to officials, every year the board elects the chair and vice chair. The board also includes four non-voting members: a high school student, an elementary or secondary school teacher, the president of the Council on Postsecondary Education and the secretary of the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.
