John M. Curran is a judge for the 4th Department of the New York Supreme Court Appellate Division. He assumed office in 2016. His current term ends on December 31, 2026.

Curran (Democratic Party) ran for re-election for judge of the New York Supreme Court 8th Judicial District. He won in the general election on November 6, 2018.

Education

Curran received his B.A. degree from the University of Dayton in 1981 and his J.D. degree from the University of Buffalo School of Law in 1984.[1]

Career

Curran began his career in 1984 as an associate of the law firm of Mershon, Sawyer, Johston, Dunwody & Cole in Miami, Florida. He returned to New York and joined the Buffalo firm of Albrecht, Maguire, Heffern and Gregg, P.C. in 1987. He became a partner of this firm in 1991 and continued to work in that capacity until 2000. He then worked as a partner of Phillips Lytle, LLP from 2000 to 2004. He also worked as a Orchard Park Town Justice from 1996 to 2004. In 2004, he was elected to the Supreme Court.[1][2]

The 324 justices of the New York Supreme Court are elected to 14-year terms in partisan elections. To appear on the ballot, candidates must be chosen at partisan nominating conventions. Sitting judges wishing to serve an additional term must run for re-election.[3]

The chief judge of the court of appeals appoints two chief administrative judges of the supreme court, one to supervise trial courts within New York City and one to supervise trial courts outside of the city.[3]

Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must:[3]

  • be a state resident;
  • have had at least 10 years of in-state law practice;
  • be at least 18 years old; and
  • be under the age of 70 (retirement at 70 is mandatory).
