Four seats on the Bulloch County Schools Board of Education were up for general election on May 20, 2014. If no candidate received a simple majority of the vote in the general election, a runoff election for that seat would have been held between the top two vote recipients on July 22, 2014.

All four incumbents ran for re-election to their seats. Mike Sparks and Steve Hein ran unopposed and won re-election in District 2 and District 4, respectively. Incumbent Vernon Littles lost to challenger Glennera Martin for the District 5 seat, while newcomer Jay Cook, Jr. overcame board member Anshul Jain for the District 6 seat.[1]

Bulloch County Schools is located in Bulloch County, Georgia. The county seat of Bulloch County is Statesboro, Georgia. Bulloch County is home to 71,214 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[2] Bulloch County Schools was the 39th-largest school district in Georgia, serving 9,776 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[3]

Demographics

Bulloch County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 26.9 percent of Bulloch County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Bulloch County was $34,403 compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Bulloch County was 31.3 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[2]

Voter and candidate information

The Bulloch County Schools Board of Education consists of eight members. All members are elected to four-year terms. Board members are elected separately by distinct geographical districts. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on May 20, 2014. If no candidate received a simple majority of the vote in a given race, the top two vote recipients would have proceeded to a runoff election on July 22, 2014. Four seats were up for election in 2014 and four seats will be up for election in 2016.[5]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on March 3, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[6]
