John Adrian Gibney, Jr. is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He joined the court in 2010 after a nomination from President Barack Obama (D). Gibney assumed senior status on November 1, 2021.[1][2]

Early life and education
A native of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, Gibney earned his bachelor's degree from the College of William & Mary in 1973 and his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1976.[3]

Gibney was nominated to a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia by President Obama on April 14, 2010, to a seat vacated by Robert Payne. Obama said of the nomination:
“ | I am pleased to nominate this dedicated public servant to serve on the United States District Court. He has an outstanding record of excellence and integrity and has exhibited a strong dedication to the rule of law throughout his career. I am confident he will serve the people of Virginia with distinction.[4][5] | ” |
The American Bar Association rated Gibney Unanimously Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Gibney's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 28, 2010, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on May 27, 2010. Gibney was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on December 16, 2010, and he received his commission the next day.[3][6][7]
