The Drop plot
A New York bartender rescues a neglected puppy from a garbage can, making him the target of its abusive and mentally unstable owner. At the same time, he finds himself in the middle of a plot that takes place in the mafia-controlled bar where he works.

Prima Crime / Drama which is even taken to the next level by the excellent cast in the form of Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace (great to see how American she has become) and James Gandolfini. Unfortunately for the latter it was his last film (he also appropriately ends in this ), but fortunately he still played a strong role that was tailor-made for him.
The story is well put together and also manages to captivate from the first to the last minute and was even a bit exciting at the end. The execution (including the beautiful puppy pitbull) was also good, although the film is a bit slow and long-winded here and there and I am mainly referring to the middle part. I also loved the ending. At about 100 minutes, the film is not too long, so it is also nice to look away.
All in all, just a fine Crime / Drama and a nice ending (albeit unfortunately) to the film career of James Gandolfini.

After his great success Rundskop (for me anyway) Roskam also got his tires in America. With a very decent yet raw crime film The Drop. The funny thing is that he manages to make something very strong out of a rippling film.
The calling card is all the cold, gray settings of Brooklyn. Dilapidated residential areas, gloomy atmosphere and the smoky seedy bars known as the "Drop-bars". Bob owns such a place, along with his grumbling colleague Marv (Tom Hardy and Gandolfini put together a strong duo here)... When their bar is robbed and all the deal money is stolen, they must come up with a ruse to to get it back. After all, the money belongs to the Russian mafia. Ok... this seems like a standard crime theme again but we also add an abused street dog. Who one day Bob fishes out of a garbage can and takes care of it himself... The garbage can turns out to belong to the burly Nadia (nice role by Noomi Rapace) where a romance is formed. But in the end, the dog is still not forgotten by his sadistic owner... Matthias Schoenaerts also knows how to play a convincing role. His English-language role in this is a bit stronger than his rather submissive role in Blood Ties.
And so we are presented with a beautiful braided story in which, due to a still somewhat scarce offer of action/payback or torture scenes, it still manages to become a very beautiful and very neat crime film in which you do not feel any flaws. Interspersed with a grim film noir atmosphere and subtlety and a top cast. Moreover, the slums of New York always work well for these kinds of themes.

Join des1. Yet another film that tries to show the person behind the criminal/murderer. Quite true, but not new. And that is The Drop in a nutshell: a slow drama that comes to a boiling bubble towards the end. Solid but not necessarily good and certainly not captivating, all safe according to the Hollywood formula and with quite a few well-known names to try to lift the print somewhat out of the gray sea of identical films. 2.5*
