Still Mine plot

"Still Devoted. Still Determined."

The story of Craig Morrison, an 89-year-old New Brunswick resident, who faces the government when he wants to build a better-adapted home for his wife Irene, whose memory is fading. Although Craig uses the same methods as his father, a shipbuilder, he notices that times have changed. Craig soon finds himself up against an overzealous government inspector, who finds almost everything he does unacceptable, including the wood Craig uses from his own trees. However, Irene is more likely to fall ill, and as the work often comes to a halt, Craig will have to rush to finish the house.

Indeed a sweet, compassionate, solid drama (also based on a true event), which in terms of production is very similar to a television film (would be perfect for a channel like EO or Omroep MAX).

The sentimental, simple story about growing old, building a house against all laws and Alzheimer's is quite nicely constructed and is also often moving. The execution of the story is also good and the film is mainly carried by lead actor James Cromwell who plays the role of Craig Morrison well, beautifully and convincingly (you sympathize with him and feel the injustice he has to endure when building the house himself). The role of Geneviève Bujold as Craig Morrison's wife (Irene) who suffers from Alzheimer's was also quite good. The ending was beautiful and satisfying and that also applies to the music played at the end.

All in all, just a solid and beautiful drama, which is moving here and there.

Had to think of Haneke's "Amour" every now and then, although not exactly the same, but still about a close love bond between two elderly people.
I have rarely been captivated by actress Geneviève Bujold, but here she gives, together with an impressively acting James Cromwell, a convincing performance, in a beautiful, sensitive film, based on a true event, as it turns out. Impressive.
And as for the dispute about whether or not it was lawful to build: The heart has won over the law. But a good thing too.

87-year-old Craig Morrison [James Cromwell] notices that his wife Irene [Geneviève Bujold] is deteriorating physically and mentally. That's why he decides to build a new house on his own property. He ignores the warnings of neighbor and good friend Chester [George R. Robertson] and starts work without a permit. It doesn't take long for an inspector [Jonathan Potts] to order him to stop the construction. Cromwell and Bujold immediately win your heart in this true story that is not only a love story, but also shows how important it is to have friends and family support you in times of need.
