This atypical work by Stone uses a curious combination of satire and effect. The almost megalomaniac performance almost parallels the television program of Robert Downey's character. The morbid jokes, an apathetic Lewis, a grimace Tommy Lee Jones; the film purposefully abandons the idea of subtlety altogether. There is not a single sympathetic character in sight and the protagonists are even completely devoid of any moral ambiguity.

Just the culmination of unadulterated badness in tha face, Stone thought. The fact that the name Quentin Tarantino is associated with this project explains something, but also doing it for him is beyond all borders. My personal assessment of this fact is twofold: on the one hand, the entertainment is at its best, on the other hand, the robust cinematography and the explicit display of violence gradually flattened out. By the time we get to the prison rebellion, the perplexed viewing experience has now given way to jeering laughter.

Hamburgers on the menu today, and a clumsy film would fit with that, I thought. I was under the impression that this was going to be a war movie. That turned out to be something else, but I can say that I got my money's worth more than enough.

The opening scene was very reminiscent of Tarantino, and the opening credits also showed that the scenario is his hand. Yet none of his own films can match the extremity of this film. Not so much in terms of graphic violence, but especially in terms of imagery and intensity, this film is really miles ahead of Tarantino's work.

Visually quite a trip. Pretty experimental: colour, black-and-white, animation, filters, everything comes along after being chopped up quite a bit on the editing table. I don't really care much about the story in the end, enough to see: it's dynamic, surreal and intense. Perhaps the tailor-made soundtrack could have strengthened the whole a bit more. Still a strong collection of songs, from Leonard Cohen to A Night on Bald Mountain by Mussorgsky to Rage Against The Machine.

Hoped in advance for good entertainment, but it turns out to be the way beyond. 4.5*.

A film that makes no sense or is neither meat nor fish. However you describe it, this is in fact just rubbish. Change from color images to black and white every ten seconds. Then an animation in between, then an animal such as a rabbit and then a bare chest again. What the hell are you doing as a director?

I find it really strange that a slightly psychedelic trip is chosen here. What does that add to the story? Also serious glorification of violence. I can hardly believe the message this film conveys.

The acting is often very over the top. Especially Mallory (Juliette Lewis), Tommy Lee Jones (what got into him?) and Robert Downey Jr. I've always found the latter to be an overrated actor.

Film 2 by Oliver Stone and this goes even further downhill after a 2* film.
