Sin City plot

"Walk down the right back alley in Sin City and you can find anything..."

Basin City, also known as 'Sin City' is the city where murder and crime are the order of the day. The first story, ''The Hard Goodbye'', follows tough-as-nails street fighter Marv on a quest for revenge after being framed for the murder of prostitute Goldie, the only woman who ever cared about him. The second story, ''The Big Fat Kill'', revolves around Dwight and the tough girls of Old Town. He tries to protect the girls from the corrupt cop Jack Rafferty. The film's third and final story, "That Yellow Bastard," follows ex-cop John Hartigan. He has made a promise to protect Nancy Callahan from a disfigured pedophile, Junior.

Visually brilliant. It feels and looks like a comic. A perfect stylistic exercise from Tarantino's best student. And with the cooperation of Frank Miller himself, this could not but succeed. The starkly decadent Sin City world comes to life through three different stories that are intertwined. Only the story with Jackie Boy and Dwight was a bit disappointing, but coming up with a well-thought-out plot was not the goal anyway. Rodriguez mainly wants to bring the comic atmosphere to life. And how. He does this with shadow play, with black and white and a few touches of red, yellow or blue, with a lot of sadistic violence in which revenge and chivalry are the common thread. Nearly every frame is a faithful reproduction of the comic, and those with an eye for detail will admire the artistic care of the director. The tempo was sometimes a bit too fast but this is the only flaw in this masterpiece. I think this is one of the best comic book adaptations.

“An old man dies. A young woman lives. A fair trade. I love you, Nancy.”

Beautifully designed, original, exciting and stoneware. Sin City consists of three stories, with three different directors who know how to put their own stamp on it. Yet it all flows into each other in an almost casual way, and it all feels as one.

We follow Hartigan (Bruce Willis), Marv (Mickey Rourke) and Dwight (Clive Owen), all three looking to do good or set things right in a city of crime, corruption, sex, murder and intrigue. Sin City is based on a comic book series by Frank Miller, and the film radiates that from all sides. It's black and white (with some well-chosen moments with color), the decor is completely in comic book style and it all has a wonderful film noir atmosphere. I found the story about Marv and his Goldie interesting to follow, but also Hartigan and his relationship with Nancy (Jessica Alba) was great. The story around Dwight is slightly less but still intriguing. And with Benicio Del Toro in his maniacal style and the sensual Rosario Dawson as fighting machine Gail, you can never go wrong. Sin City is not a world for the faint of heart. Rock hard, uncompromising, sexy and explicit… Delicious.

Friday already for the 3rd time watched with some friends. I appreciate this film more and more with each revision, and that is a hope. Probably the most faithful cartoon adaptation ever, the style is sometimes a bit gloomy, but that's part of it. The characters and overall atmosphere is pure cool, visually stunning and never boring. The stories are a bit absurd, and the monologues are constant (just like in a comic book!), which makes the film not for everyone. Personally, I think it's a great movie that I can watch more often, that makes it worth a 4.5 for me!
