Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels plot

"A Disgrace to Criminals Everywhere."

Friends Eddy (Nick Moran), Soap (Dexter Fletcher), Tom (Jason Flemyng) and Bacon (Jason Statham) have a plan. Thanks to Eddy's poker talent, they will earn a lot of money in one evening. What they did not foresee, however, was that the organiser of the event had no intention of making it fair. The four not only lose their money, but now also owe half a million pounds to the dreaded gangster. They have one week to pay off their debts before the Liquidator comes to visit.

revised. Barely dated, this is still a very funny, classy and inventive crime comedy, packed with wacky characters and hilarious dialogue. Here and there the low budget can't keep up with director Guy Ritchie's ambition and some dialogue scenes feel a bit static, but all in all this is still a pretty impressive debut.

Wonderful (first) work by Guy Ritchie. A director who until now could only appeal moderately to average, but with this film and the slightly later Snatch, he has simply delivered two (small) masterpieces. He is sometimes called the lesser man's Tarantino, but Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels would not be out of place in Quentin's oeuvre in terms of quality and level. The charming brown-grey filter, the dry British atmosphere and ditto humor, funny and memorable characters who end up in increasingly absurd situations, the various plot lines that closely intertwine and are brought together in the most inventive ways; it all just runs smoothly and it fits together well. The soundtrack is also great, and present at the right moments. Jason Statham is on a roll, but it really is an ensemble cast, and each actor gets about the same amount of space to make his mark. How the four friends end up each time on a massacre where their enemies have killed each other is hilarious in a dry and melancholy way. In any case, I had to laugh quite often; the joke density is higher in this one than in Snatch as far as I'm concerned. Although the latter has a more polished style and a slightly more ingenious plot. Lock, Stock.. feels a bit more like a diamond in the rough compared to Snatch, but it has just as much charm in its own way. Really great movie, Ritchie at his best. Thick 4*.

Funny movie but hopelessly dated. The acting doesn't really last, but that's what makes it funny. The story is thin and so are the dialogues. Funny to see Sting in a movie again. Seeing it once is more than enough.

Saaie boel, niet mijn ding. Geef mij maar het nieuwere werk van Statham. 3 sterren
