The autobiographical story of LaBeouf and you can taste that while watching this indie-like film. LaBeouf plays the part of his life as his own father. A very narcissistic bastard, but at the same time you feel the pain that this character carries. An asshole who somehow understands you. A poor upbringing just affects a person's later life. Because you see that reflected in his son afterwards. Lucas Hedges plays the part of his 22 year old son "Honey boy" really fantastic. Tormented by a past where he was actually subconsciously terrorized by his father (who is inept) you just feel the pain the younger "Honey boy" experiences in the flashbacks, a role played subtly and beautifully by Noah Jupe.

The film is small, heartfelt and dominated by three talented actors. I really enjoyed this. That ending on the motor, that symbolism. Actions sometimes speak louder than words.

Get into the third film by Israeli-American filmmaker Alma Har'el (Bombay Beach, LoveTrue) without any previous knowledge and you might not even realize that LaBeouf isn't just playing the title character's father. The realization that LaBeouf is his father, and in that capacity therefore communicates with his younger self, can change the tone and meaning of the film for and through the eyes of the viewer. Honey Boy is the semi-autobiographical account of LaBeouf's life: Shia, in his thirties, is now called Otis and Otis is played in two different phases by a teenager (Noah Jupe) and a twenty-something (Lucas Hedges). As screenwriter and father of Otis, LaBeouf is human and actor in one. Shia knows where reality stops and performance begins.

A film with potential just not fulfilled.

The frequent return to 12-year-old Otis and then back to adult Otis makes the movie messed up.

There is especially strong acting by Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges. Shia LaBeouf is disappointing because he tries too hard and seems forced.

It's not entirely clear to me where it should all lead. Perhaps that is the intention.
