Ruby Rossi [Emilia Jones] is a Child Of Deaf Adults and has a deaf brother [Leo Rosi]. Since Ruby is the only one in the family who can hear, her parents rely heavily on her for communication with the outside world. But Ruby dreams of a career as a singer. When music teacher Bernardo (with rrrolling rrr's) [Eugenio Derbez] discovers her talent and offers to prepare her for an audition at the Berklee School of Music, she sees an opportunity to stand on her own two feet. But can her parents live without her? A standard coming-of-age drama about a teenager who literally has to find her own voice, but Heder (which was based on the film La Famille Beliéruit 2014) has three very strong protagonists and the chemistry, but above all the humor (subtitled sign language) of the family members often makes you laugh out loud. Derbez's refusal to be caricatured as the quirky music teacher is another plus, but it's Jones' perfect, disarming playing that makes this one of the most memorable films of the year. Won the Audience Award, Jury Award and Best Director Award at the Sundance Festival. So a bull's eye.

I usually don't like remakes much. However, this film is one of the proverbial exceptions to my rule, because it comes very close in entertainment value to the French original from 2014. That is mainly the credit of Emilia Jones, who rivals her French counterpart Louane Emera with a charming interpretation.

A pleasant reunion also with Marlee Matlin, whom I completely lost sight of after her memorable performance in Children of a Lesser God (1986) .

Nice, sympathetic film about 17-year-old Ruby (Emilia Jones), the only person in her family who is not deaf. When she turns out to have singing talent, her family life comes under pressure. The film cleverly avoids the many pitfalls of the genre and is never too melodramatic or pedantic, although some scenes are perhaps a little too thick and/or forced. For the most part, though, it's all done very tastefully, with lots of fun jokes and nicely observed moments. The acting is also unanimously strong, with an engaging lead by Jones.
