Seabiscuit plot

"The hopes of a nation rode on a long shot."

Charles Howard (Bridges), a former bicycle mechanic who made his fortune by introducing the automobile to the western United States, buys a horse named Seabiscuit. Seabiscuit is a coarsely built, undersized horse with a sad little tail and bent knees. After two years of bitter struggle against his trainers, poor performance as a racehorse, misunderstanding and abuse, Howard discovers his horse's hidden talent and entrusts it to two men. One of the two men is Red Pollard (Maguire), a failed jockey who has been living in a horse stable since his family's bankruptcy as a result of the Great Depression. The other man is Tom Smith (Cooper), a prairie horse tamer, former pioneer and full of ancient wisdom about the mystique of the horse. Using a striking training method, they discover that beneath the hostile and fearful exterior lurks a classy horse.

Perfectly acted, beautifully made and an inspiring story. The emotions are played well, genuine American sentiment. The Oscar nominations may be a bit exaggerated, but dismissing this film as standard Hollywood material does the quality of the film a bit too short.

3.5*.

Nice movie, but it's a bit long for a story like this. Normally I don't mind that a film is long, eg like The American Gangster, but with this film I had the feeling that it could also be done in a shorter time.

Still a fun movie to watch.

I thought it was a strong film, and a message like "we're not throwing away a whole life if it's dented." always works well with my sentimental self

One downside: the beginning was all quite chaotic, with the events/characters not immediately clear to me. After this lesser first half hour, however, the film gets going and it certainly appealed to me.

The nice thing about the film is the use of old photos that are inserted here and there. The character of the audience-playing radio man - at a time when TV and the Internet could not provide people with information - was also very well played (although it was a rewarding role).

All in all a nice evening and glad I recorded it a few weeks ago!

Recommended!
