“Damn. I really wanted you.”

The greatest strength of Devil is that the story has no unnecessary ballast. Just five people in an elevator being murdered one by one, and the police trying to figure out what's going on. The devil hangs over the film like a shadow, but luckily the emphasis remains on the characters and the feeling of paranoia, craziness and tension. A choice that works out perfectly.

I do like movies that take place in a place, like this one in an elevator. I myself suffer from claustrophobia and would not like to be stuck in such a place, but I would like to see other people in that plight. Pleasure!
This is quite an exciting movie and I really couldn't guess who the devil was when I first saw it. Now I knew it already, but still enjoyed this "Devil". Exciting from start to finish.

Fine.

After seeing No Escape at the time, I thought Dowdle was an excellent director in terms of building and holding tension. Then you would think that horror shouldn't be a problem for him, but it turns out that it is, because he has not yet convinced me in the field of horror.

It's all quite nicely set up nonetheless. I've always been nervous about elevators, so a horror movie set in an elevator shouldn't be a problem, you might think. Still, I felt little tension, and that's the main problem with Devil.

It's just not all that exciting, Dowdle doesn't know how to generate and/or maintain the tension. The film lacks threat, grit and especially exciting scenarios. There is no real talk of claustrophobia, despite a few attempts.

Where the film does manage to get its strength from is the mystery level, acting and speed. The acting is solid, and the who-is-it plot works very well. Moreover, the speed is early, and with a playing time of only 80 minutes you are guaranteed good entertainment for a little over an hour and a half.

Visually it's okay. The CGI has flaws, but the film is well shot and edited. The fact that the film does not last very long for horror terms keeps the momentum going, making the film very easy to watch. It's just a shame that the final twist where it turns out to be the old woman who is the devil is a bit bland.

Fun entertainment that keeps you interested. It's not very exciting or unique, but it is well-directed. Of course there could have been a lot more, but the final result is entertaining enough to say the least.
