One of the biggest myths to dispel around free ad-supported streaming TV is that it consists purely of reruns.
Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav provided a prime example of this during the third-quarter earnings call last year, when he mentioned that classic westerns such as “Rawhide” and “Bonanza” were the type of content best suited to FAST.
While it is true that FAST was built on the bones of reruns and digital shorts from content publishers on YouTube, it’s no longer 2019. FAST as a medium has seen tremendous growth, with Big Media and entertainment companies embracing it with gusto.
With this has come a focus on original content.
There are a number of strategies FAST services and channels are utilizing for original content. Originals come in all shapes and sizes — scripted shows, unscripted shows, news and sports — and some channels have won daytime Emmys (Tastemade and Freevee). Thus, this is not watered-down content made on a cheap budget but rather shows content that can mix it up with the best of cable TV and SVOD.
Originals on FAST can be a great way for an independent channel to distinguish itself. Tastemade’s hallmark channel, featuring food content, is a great example of this, with coverage growing from 4 major FAST services in October 2019 to 11 in August 2023 — and key to this are originals.
Not only did Tastemade win its Daytime Emmy in 2022 for Outstanding Culinary Host (Frankie Celenza, “Struggle Meals”), but the channel has aired 27 originals seasons of content since 2021, with six exclusive acquisitions also airing on it.
Tastemade is not the only independent channel investing in originals. LOL Network, owned by Kevin Hart, has featured shows made for it, like “Cold as Balls.” Vevo recently launched the original longform series “Extended Play” on Vevo Pop, Trusted Media Brands creates 85% of the content across its five FAST channels, and independent distributor FilmRise has created 13 originals that air across its channels. Ryan Reynolds and Fubo’s newly launched “Maximum Effort Channel” features the original “Bedtime Stories With Ryan.” Channels like "KIN," "Fox Soul," and "Revolt Mixtape" all have a slate of original unscripted content available.
FAST platforms are also producing originals. Here it is a little different, as the content is typically available both as an AVOD title and also as a FAST channel. High-profile examples include “Tubi Originals” (exclusive to Tubi), “Roku Channel Movies & TV” (only on Roku Channel) and Daytime Emmy-winning “Judy Justice Channel” on Freevee.
Platforms are also investing in scripted content. Freevee has channels for the Electric Entertainment-produced Freevee original “Leverage: Redemption,” as well as a “Judge and Jury” channel, which blends “Judy Justice” and “Jury Duty.” Roku owns the Quibi library, from which it still makes originals, as well as producing original movies, and Tubi has produced literally hundreds of original movies, which it features as AVOD titles and within its aforementioned channel.
News and sport channels also create original content. CBS Sports launched the “CBS Sports Golazo Network” in April, which includes a daily morning show. The Women’s Sports Network features FAST-only sports rights, studio shows and the original sports game show "Game On." Sports talk shows are also fertile ground for originals, with Freevee offering "Prime Video Sports Talk” and Roku Channel having a channel for “The Rich Eisen Show.”
News should also be considered a key area for original content on FAST. NBC, Fox, ABC and CBS all have FAST-only national networks with original coverage, as does Scripps Networks’ Scripps News, while TelevisaUnivision offers “Noticias Univision 247.” There are also FAST weather networks like "AccuWeather" and "Fox Weather."
Bringing this analysis full circle and back to Zaslav, it’s telling that of all the major news brands on FAST, CNN’s “CNN Headline” is the only channel to not have original content. One could easily argue that the short-lived CNN+ live channel would have been well suited to FAST — on current grounds, it’s hard to understand why a viewer would choose to watch recycled clips on CNN Headline ahead of live coverage on a rival news FAST.
The newly announced “CNN Max” channel, which will be a live 24/7 channel featuring original content but locked up on the Max SVOD platform, shows how WBD execs have their fingers off the pulse when it comes to live news distribution in the FAST era
The image that some media executives and ad buyers have of FAST as the realm only of shows from the 1950s to the ’80s should be consigned to the past. It’s undeniable that a large swath of content on FAST is library content. But it is equally undeniable that originals are making up more and more of channel line-ups. With the likes of Kevin Hart and Ryan Reynolds contributing to that, it’s only a matter of time before more high-profile names step in to help to shatter the illusion of FAST as fit only for reruns.
