Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song

When highly evolved AIs set out to eradicate mankind, the carnage that ensues fills the air with the stench of fresh blood and burning bodies. In a desperate bid to prevent the calamity from ever occurring, a scientist bets everything on a remnant from the past.

Turning the clock back a hundred years, AIs are already an integral part of human society, programmed with specific missions meant to be carried out for their entire course of operation. Vivy, the first ever autonomous AI, is a songstress tasked with spreading happiness through her voice. In a theme park where she hardly ever gets a proper audience, she strives to pour her heart out into her performances, bound to repeat it day after day—that is, until an advanced AI from the future appears before her and enlists her help in stopping a devastating war a hundred years in the making. With no time to process the revelation that flips her world upside down, Vivy is catapulted into a century-long journey to avert the violent history yet to come.

An excellent anime for me i loved Diva oh sorry Vivy and ofcourse Matsumoto i loved each and every character.

This anime really warned us about AI like telling us how dependency can cause an unchangeable damage.The songs in this anime were just beautiful, storywriting,character writing, the art,everything about this anime was just beautiful. Each and every episode had such a beautiful story relatable characters and a lot more.This was such a joyful ride I completed this anime on the 1st of Jan i hope this year will be just as beautiful as this anime.

A very good anime i will really recommend it to anyone ... who is reading this review right now you should really give it a watch.

Mixed Feelings

I was cautiously optimistic upon deciding to watch this anime, considering that this one shares both its creator and main premise with my unquestionable most despised anime. Indeed, I hate Re:Zero with a burning passion for myriad reasons that are too complicated to describe now, but its overall premise of traveling back in time to change the future isn't inherently one of those, and I'm willing to give things a second chance. Fortunately, Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song was far more enjoyable, but with a few glaring flaws (some shared with Re:Zero) that ultimately mar the full experience.

Suspension of disbelief is the key here. The more ... seriously that an anime presents itself, the lower my tolerance for issues in plot and worldbuilding. Said issues aggregate to form Vivy's greatest flaw: the story it tells only works within the assumptions and rules that it creates for itself, but those rules collapse in on themselves when interpreted by real-world social and technological standards. Our protagonist, Diva (nicknamed Vivy, but I'll refer to her as Diva so as to not conflate the name of the anime overall) is a humanoid AI designed to be an idol singer - which is the most believable facet of the worldbuilding, case in point Hatsune Miku - but the way in which AIs like her are integrated into the world and setting bring far too many issues and inconsistencies. Just a few of those being...

- Vivy is inconsistent with whether or not AIs are people or tools. It starts off by telling us that AIs gaining more human rights is the first step towards humanity's inevitable extinction, but they still have personalities and feeling anyway... yet the AIs still call themselves solely tools for humans... It's never fully reconciled which side it takes.

- The only people who disagree with increasing AI prominence in this show are terrorists, and it's never implied that there could just be other opinions. I hope this is obvious, but if it isn't, just browse social media for a bit, you'll find loads of vocal outcry against the increasing prominence of AI technology.

- It's treated as a big deal that someone married an AI, decades after their integration with society. Let's not kid ourselves, it would only take a month before someone tries that, at most.

- Supposedly it takes very nearly 100 years for AI to create their own music - the eponymous Fluorite Eye's Song - and this is treated as something incredibly meaningful, but AI can already do that right now in the real world so that revelation falls completely hollow.

- Diva herself is involved in most of the action setpieces, being a veritable combative force in these engagements. Except she's a songstress. There is no reason why her body would be built to withstand these situation. It's written off as the future software giving her capabilities, but software cannot overcome hardware limitations, plain and simple.

And the biggest of these worldbuilding flaws needs its own special mention. None of the AI and AI-adjacent technologies here have any failsafes or countermeasures. It's like the concept of "software assurance" doesn't exist in Vivy's universe, and as a software engineer myself, there is genuinely no excuse for this. Not even in fiction. But it's only because of this lack of assurance, because of all the glaring single points of failure in these technologies and designs, that the plot can happen in the first place.

Also, I hate to say it, but I'm not a fan of the character direction. Diva's personality starts off flat and robotic (obviously) which is fine but wholly cliched and not particularly engaging. Matsumoto is the exact opposite, being loud and annoying with how he interacts with Diva, coming off to me as a heroic version of Monokuma, and while he's not quite so extreme, it's jarringly over-the-top for an action-suspense show like Vivy. Given the 100-year time span, most other side characters are only needed for their self-contained plot events, meaning these two are the only constant personailities throughout the runtime. Fortunately, they do get better, Diva predictably opens her heart and Matsumoto's antics tone down as they accomplish their mission.

Yet despite all of these grievances, Vivy's impactful and memorable moments are incredibly powerful. If you disregard all my problems with the worldbuilding and foundation, and only focus on the actual events in the plotline itself, then Vivy is genuinely amazing. The action is perfectly choreographed, major plot events are paced, minor plot twists are constantly being introduced to keep you always engaged and anticipating what happens next, and the downtime between always serves some sort of purpose, whether its recontextualizing Diva's mission or teeing up the next major struggle. And the best example of this is one particular episode in the back half of the show's runtime. I won't spoil it here, but I was absolutely blindsided by its ending. At first, I wasn't exactly sure what it was trying to accomplish, I thought it was too slow and melodramatic for its own good, yet it was all setting up the anime's biggest plot twist, immaculately upheaving the entire show up to that point and segueing masterfully into the final act.

These types of animes are always the hardest ones for me to reconcile in retrospect. I want to recommend this wholeheartedly for its powerful and impactful moments, yet I can't overcome the flawed foundation and plot holes. And the more I wrote this review, the less I could forgive it. Great setpieces and moments can be genuinely breathtaking in the moment, yet still ring hollow in hindsight. That is regrettably how this song will conclude.

"Bad writing is masked by great production" is the definition for this show.

When I watched the first Vivy 2 episodes I feel it's great. The design of the sci-fi world that is rare in anime and the heroine's character design like Vivy is awesome, reminds me of Violet Evergarden. But after that, the story wasn't that good at all.

Vivy's writing is filled with plot holes and sick logic of the characters. There are various crazy concepts such as Humans marry AI?, AI kills themselves? AI takes over the world? Of course, if you don't think about it, it will be normal. But if you think ... about it, this idea is very retarded. Every time I see humans in this story, I tend to think that they have no brains and deserve to be destroyed by their own AI.

Good world design turned out to be a major weakness because the story never explored the setting within the world. We don't even understand what the real state of society would be like when it came to the era when humans created AI to work for themselves. Therefore, there are many questions that cannot be explained rationally.

The plot is divided into arcs. In each arc there are about 2 to 3 chapters telling the main character in that arc. But the narrative is so rushed every now and then that all the characters are cut off so quickly and you'll forget about them at the end of the episode.

I don't recommend that you watch this show if you want a sensible and deep story. But if you want great art and brain-free fun. I would highly recommend it, but for me, I hate this show because it's too stupid for me to enjoy its stupidity.

(Additional: The ending was terrible. Very predictable, extremely rushed, stupid and boring.)
