Somewhat disappointing. Music and cast are good, but unfortunately the story lacks some drama to really convince. Now it just ripples on without really great things happening...

3*

“She's gone. She gave me a pen. I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen.”

Really nice movie. The film looks a bit dated and some of the characters hang around a bit, but the direction of Crowe, Cusack and Skye, the witty dialogues and of course the great music make Say Anything a more than successful coming of age film.

Especially the game of Cusack and Skye (those eyes) ensures that you enjoy watching the budding romance of Lloyd and Diane. The way the underachiever Lloyd manages to convince the smartest and prettiest girl in class Diane to go on a date with him is funny to watch and their further relationship is also strongly developed. It all feels natural and that's to Crowe and the actors' credit. There is also some drama around the corner and the film convinces there too. In the 1980s, many coming of age movies were released and Say Anything is one of the better ones.

Quite acceptable romantic comedy (!) about a lid that absolutely does not fit on the potty, but they find each other anyway. It's the beauty of the film, the simple, the sympathetic, the candid.
Then the incident with the father disturbs the idyllic and the quality of the film and improbability (Who keeps a wad of stolen money up for grabs in a box on a table?) creeps into the film, which fortunately turns out to be ends on an uplifting note.
