Review: The ever vital Boogie Back has another pearler on its hands here. This 7" is an SOS Band influenced double header produced by Ernie McKone, with Cheri Maree on the vocals. Firstly, 'Time Waits' pairs nice analogue drum work and big, pixelated chords straight from the 80s. It's a sugar sweet tune with a buttery smooth vocal that will get those rumps wiggling. Flip it over and you will find 'Is It You', a more slow and sentimental tune with splashy chords and bendy bass. The vibe is steamy and romantic, with the sort of tempting groove that you won't be able to resist.

Review: After a 14-year absence, early '90s jazz-funk and street soul label Boogie Back Records returned to action last year which a superb slab of revivalist boogie from Cheri Maree. Here the London-based imprint continues in a similar vein via a fresh two-track "45" from in-house crew BB Soul and honey-voiced vocalist Laura Jackson. A-side "Make It Out" is superb: a wholehearted musical tribute to the smooth, synth-heavy sounds of 1980s soul rich in D-Train style synth bass, wild synth squiggles, warm Rhodes chords and authentic electric guitar flourishes - all topped off with a sublime Jackson vocal. Flipside "Reach Out" is a smoother, arguably even more soulful number that sits somewhere between early '80s electrofunk, mid-80s synth-soul and simmering British street soul. It, too, is impeccably performed and produced.

Review: Funk, soul and boogie foundations are relaid, with this standout 7" record from 2023 reissued through the same outlet, Boogie Back. With authorial stylishness and pelvic passion, Ernie & The Family McKone have been going ever since the eponymous Boogie Back founder first began releasing underground dance music and street soul in 1992. After a mid-noughts hiatus, he is back with a fresher soul delight, charting the smoother soul directions he's reoriented himself in in recent years. Slick basses and fire falsettos charm up this puree of sound, as Lex Cameron and Valerie Etienne each compel us to move closer inwards: 'Feels Like I'm In Love', with its titular refrain, mirrors our reaction to the music.

Review: Ernie Mckone & Toby Baker have produced this new single for Erine & The Family McKone. The A-side features Valerie Ettienne who is well known for her work with the likes of Galliano and Jamiroquai (with him she made a cover of a Brenda Russell classic). 'In The Thick Of It' is a super silky and mid-tempo soul jam with lavish melodies and gentle grooves. The flipside is in cahoots with Lex Cameron, an increasingly noteworthy London-based singer. It's a tender and loved up tune for cosy dance floor moments.

Review: Boogie Back Records have been going consistently since the early 90s, serving as a rare case of a label whose relentless output helps blur the lines of "boogie" and "neo-boogie". And while an increasing sanitation of sound might often be associated with most generic "neos", Ernie & The Family Mckone prove this wrong on their latest 7", 'That Girl', whose sound is as tight yet live as ever. Fronted by Boogie Back label owner, singer, producer and guitarist Ernie Mckone (aka. "The Great Ernesto"), this record is a family affair in aspirate vocals and finger-clicking beat bounces. The A-side hears Mckone aim to relieve a lover from pain by keeping a secret, and the B slangs lower on a near-variation of the same beat, albeit the lyrics carry a deep saudade.

Review: Intriguing new reissue from Ernie & The Family McKone on the acclaimed Boogie Back, just one of many labels to focus on obscure street soul, freestyle and R&B since the early 90s. One side is a freestylectro remix of an absolute classic, while the B's 'Make A Move On Me' is much sultrier, replete with digital organs and soft strings against a steady-sexy house backing.

Review: Push returns with a vibrant 7" release featuring their acclaimed classic 'Cut Me Loose' on Side-1. Originally unleashed in 1994, this funk gem, inspired by the JBs, remains a defining piece of rare groove art. The song has been in demand since so this reissue should satisfy those rare groove buyers in getting one. On Side-2, the funk outfit unveils 'Superstar Skd,' their first new recording in a decade. This upbeat anthem, reminiscent of Roy Ayers and Pleasure, promises to impress audiences and earn its place in DJ selections globally. With boogie music making a triumphant return, Push reaffirms their mastery of infectious grooves, ensuring their lasting impact on the funk scene.

Review: The farther away we get from the Brit funk scene of the 1980s the more magnificent it seems in retrospect. Just take this 1980s gem from one hit wonder Strike One. 'Can't Touch Me Anymore' has got it all - squelchy synth bass that is always on the move, crashing hits to get the hips going and rousing chords that bring that sunset warmth, all topped off with a steamy vocal. This loving reissue comes backed with a brand new production from the outfit in the form of 'Chicago Sunrise.' It's a jazzy late night pearler with a brilliant bassline and superb chord work. A vital little 7" if you ask us.

Review: A sophisticated blend of electronic, funk and soul, originally released in 1991 and back here in 7" form. Side-1 features 'Try My Love,' an underground jam that highlights Washburn's ability to blend these genres into a classy, enjoyable track. Side-2 presents the 2024 Boogie Back remix of 'Try My Love,' which smoothes things out and transforms the original into a melodic disco groove. This remix adds a fresh, modern twist while retaining the soulful essence of the track.
