Review: Jim Black's Houseplant sees the progressive-jazz drummer continue to refine his signature style, a fusion of jazz and rock that's as quirky as it is inventive. While not a radical shift from his previous works, this 2009 release showcases Black's distinctive approach to drumming, blending complex rhythms with sly, punchy backbeats that keep the session lively. Backed by his longtime band Alas No Axis, Black delivers a sprightly set with guitarist Hilmar Jensson, whose polytonal riffs add texture, and saxophonist Chris Speed, who brings a smoother edge to the more intense moments. Tracks like 'Malomice' highlight the band's ability to shift seamlessly between acid-rock and jazz, with Speed's saxophone weaving off-kilter melodies over Black's precise, crashing grooves. The mood softens on introspective cuts like 'Elight,' where the musicians ease into more delicate, atmospheric territory. Bassist Skuli Sverrisson provides the glue, his limber playing driving the energy throughout. Houseplant is a masterclass in balancing catchy riffs with jazz improvisation, offering an intense but melodic exploration of jazz-rock fusion.

Review: Dutch-born American jazz pianist and composer Gerald Clayton is back with a sixth album, his second on Blue Note. Ones & Twos is another exploration of jazz, hip-hop, neo-soul and raw improvisation that is all rooted in a deep conceptual framework. Featuring standout collaborators like Joel Ross, Elena Pinderhughes, Kendrick Scott and Kassa Overall, the album moves effortlessly from groove to abstraction and is inspired by turntablism, which is why Clayton created two sets of tracks that can play individually or simultaneously, blurring the line between harmony and dissonance. As rich as the sonics are, there is also real philosophical intent here, making it both a visceral and cerebral listen with layered commentary on collaboration, coexistence and creativity.

Review: In the past three decades, American organist and trumpeter Joey DeFrancesco has become synonymous with what he calls "a swinging Philly sound"; a strain of jazz shot through with soul and plenty of classic influences. "In The Key Of The Universe", then, is something of a departure, with the prolific musician turning his hand to spiritual jazz for the very first time. That means that for every smooth, dreamy and drifting composition on the album, there's another that's notably wilder and weirder, with DeFrancesco's energetic and on-point organ solos only adding to the hallucinogenic mood. While it may be a curveball, the results are uniformly impressive. In fact, it could be his most interesting and inspired album for years.

Review: Jazz Sabbath's long-lost 1968 recordings finally see the light of day, marking a pivotal moment in their turbulent history. Review: Pianist and composer Ricardo Marrero and The Group's A Taste is as rare as an honest politician. Now the magical Latin sounds are available for all once more as P-Vine serves up a special edition 7" with 'Babalondia' and 'And We'll Make Love' making this a must-cop. They are taken from a debut album that is as good as it gets and originally came on the famed tax scam label TSG. The a-side here brings the funk with floor-filling grooves to spare while on the flip it's more of a mellow outing with vibrant female vocals getting you in the mood and the groove.

Review: After two years, Steve Okonski returns under his surnamed solo alias Okonski, providing a sequel to the debut record Magnolia (2023), with another rapt jazz album for splayed-fingered piano. Long known as a contributor to the hip-hop and soul group Durand Jones & The Indications, Okonski's solo works are only somewhat grazed by soul music by comparison; they prefer to bask in pleromae of muted sound, recalling the evangelic solo spirituals of Julius Eastman, except for the fact that they are set against boughing bass movements and room-reverb beats, whose rhythms are sporadically upset by the drummer. Described as "a little more nature-based" compared to Magnolia's streets-of-NY feel, this one has an unpredictable naturalism about it.

Review: Contemporary jazz great Jeff Parker is back with new album Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy. It is a lyrical album of free improvisation driven by groove by the acclaimed guitarist and composer. It was all recorded live in a bar in LA's Highland Park neighbourhood with drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Anna Butterss and alto saxophonist Josh Johnson. The recordings reached to over ten hours but have been masterfully edited and arranged to make this a melodic, hypnotic and spacious listen. This is another gem from Jeff Parker's unique sound world.

Review: Given that Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker's Cuba: Music and Revolution - Culture Clash in Havana is one of the standout compilations of 2021, hopes are naturally sky-high for this speedy sequel. Like its predecessor, volume 2 focuses on music and made and released on the Caribbean island between 1975 and '85, this time round largely focusing on rare fusions of salsa, Latin jazz, disco, soul and funk, mostly licensed from records that have never been available outside Cuba. It's another stunning selection all told, with highlights including the heady Cuban disco/salsa fusion of Orquesta Los Van Van, the fiery disco-funk of FA 5, the heavily percussive hedonism of Luis Carobonell and the fuzzy psychedelic rock of Grupo De Experimentacion Sonora Del ICAIC. In a word: essential.

Review: It has now been three years since Matasuna Records unveiled a scorching Latin 45 showcasing two tracks by Venezuelan ensemble Phirpo y sus Caribes, led by Porfi Jimenez. Now, Matasuna is reissuing two more cuts from their sole album, Parrilla Caliente, this time on a 7" vinyl - a debut for these tracks in this format. The original 1972 album, a scarce collector's gem on Philips, holds official licensing from Jimenez's family. On the A-side, 'Y Esa Pava Que?' ignites with Latin funk fervour and is driven by robust drums, potent horns, and groovy, psychedelic keys and guitars. The B-side features 'Pa' Los Rumbero,' a vibrant rendition of Tito Puente's classic, showcasing Jimenez and his band's exceptional musicianship.

Review: Originally from Jamaica, Dizzy Reece went on to become a legendary jazz trumpeter from the mid-50s onwards, and Star Bright is surely one of his finest moments. Recorded for Blue Note in 1959, the album features Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Paul Chambers on bass, Art Taylor on drums and Wynton Kelly on piano, and if the hard bop sound is your thing, you really shouldn't be without this album in your life. From the loping opening of 'The Rake' to the sprightly 'Groovesville' and onwards, it's pure magic on the ears, freshly pressed up for an immaculate listening experience.

Review: A veritable wave-making machine in the infinity pool of British nu-jazz, producer Tom Funk rocks up with another 12" instalment in his The Sultan's Swing Project, linking with Colin Curtis Presents for a five-track EP to complement the three LPs reeled off the top so far. The usual grift of jazz, jazz-funk and acid jazz instrumentation - plus trip-hop, downtempo, dub, Balearica, and Latinesque beats - are heard in full swing here, with an extra linseed oiling for the dancefloor. Rapid club-bound bossa nova sets the scene on 'Thinking Of You', while 'Copenhagen Connection' suggests a potential sonic espionage link between London and Denmark, as a moment of Baltic dark jazz marks the only point of downtime on the record. A closing 'As I Walk On By', replete with guest singer, redrapes the Dionne Warwick hookline in looser jazz culottes.

Review: Dwight Trible is a skilled jazz vocalist and activist as well as being classed as the godfather of the LA jazz scene. He has recently impressed on Gondwana and now he is back with a new album via London jazz aficionados and analog specialists Gearbox Records that builds on the critical acclaim of his last outing, Mothership in 2019. Here Trible again links up with the modern great Kamasi Washington on saxophone while LA multi-instrumentalist Georgia Anne Muldrow provides the vocals. Sitting soul, spoken word, cosmic electronic idiosyncrasies, rich melodies and avant-garde guitars all make this another classic.

Review: Analog Africa has repressed the highly valued and long since sold-out Congo Funk! Sound Madness From The Shores Of The Mighty Congo River: Kinshasa/Brazzaville 1969-1982. It is a compilation that superbly shows off the raw energy and funkiness of the Congolese rumba scene. This is the country that spawned such as legendary bands as African Jazz, OK Jazz and African Fiesta and it is said that the concert ahead of the legendary Rumble in the Jungle boxing match between Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman is what really set young hopefully musicians on their paths, after they saw James Brown play live. The story of those artists and the labels they released on in the ensuing years is what is told so well here across four sides of vital wax.

Review: The crate-diggers behind the Mr Bongo label can usually be relied upon to showcase some seriously good tunes old and new. That's certainly the case on this third volume in their occasional "Record Club" series of compilations. Spanning sunshine soul, obscure samba, spacey jazz-funk experimentation, wide-eyed underground disco, fiery funk, weirdo rock, cheery South African bubblegum, synth-laden early '80s highlife, Ramsay Lewis style workouts and the psychedelic Middle Eastern disco-funk of Elias Rahbani, the compilation's 20 tracks are not only near faultless, but genuinely surprising and eye-opening. To quote a cliche, this collection genuinely is all killer and no filler.

Review: Encore has been remastered from the original tapes and features 11 compositions by Arthur Verocai who was joined by the legendary Azymuth, Ivan Lins and a nine-piece string section. The album was a long-awaited follow-up to his 1972 debut so bridges 35 years and bottles up Brazilian influences with American soul and cinematic experimentation. Initially overlooked amongst his wider canon, Verocai's debut gained cult status thanks to Far Out Recordings' Joe Davis who rediscovered it in the late 80s. In 2004, producer Dave Brinkworth brought Verocai back to the studio to reignite his musical brilliance. A master arranger, Verocai's work with Brazilian legends shaped his visionary sound and have helped to cement him as a timeless force in music history.
