'Cosmic Freaks' takes a 60s go-go rock groove and infuses it with Moog and Space Echo effects while paying homage to the psychedelic club sounds of Pierre Henry and JJ Perrey. 'Cherie Boca' then transports you in an instant to the funky samba rhythms of 70s Brazil with an extended edit and added beats to guide dancers from the favela to the beach. Review: This is ex-Teardrop Explodes frontman and cult hero Julian Cope's third record in as many years - he's operating at the speed that a lot of 60s/70s psychedelia artists that he was inspired by were and, in turn, making everyone else look a bit lazy. As a songwriter his satirical and absurdist sense of humour shines through; he makes you laugh as often as he makes you want to tap your foot and sing-a-long. And the uniqueness of his personality shines through with countless witty lines. A case in point is the brilliant "They ruined my Subbuteo and made their escape / Four Jehovah's in a Volvo estate", which is talk/sung over a motorik beat replete with mind-bending mellotron. Elsewhere, the bedroom-glam rock album opener 'Too Freud To Rock'n'Roll/Too Jung To Die' is a brilliant takedown of someone who's seemingly wound him up on the internet. With tunes this good, long may the rebirth of Cope continue.

If you don't know (well, even if you do know it is still true), Californian multi-instrumentalist Brian Ellis is Egyptian Lover's keyboard player, and is also a member of Campus Christi with Peanut Butter Wolf. He steps out alone here with a new and outlier funk album that shows off his idiosyncratic style. It is a raw and dense sound that mixes up bold funk and gritty psychedelic soul while embracing the darker edges of both styles. Along the way, Ellis explores themes of truth, authenticity and the pitfalls of wealth while reflecting on the cost of giving away one's heart. Tracks like 'The Real Deal' and 'Money Drives Me Crazy 'capture these ideas with unfiltered emotion.

Review: Israeli funk quartet Sababa 5 and Japanese singer-cum-bellydancer Yurika Hanashima join forces again on 'Kokoro', a combination of two song suites: four brand new concoctions and four beloved older tracks. Sababa 5's unique combination of Middle Eastern funk and Mediterranean rhythm makes a surprisingly sensational combination with Japanese Jazz-fusion sensibilities. Opening track 'Empty Hands' is a string-led proposition by Yurika: When your hands are empty, you hold everything you need. The guitars are expressive without overpowering Yurika's gentle vocals - it's the perfect track for a sunny drive home. The real selling point here is the clutch of tracks from Sababa and Yurika's storied past, namely 'Tokyo Midnights, a jangly, groove-filled song describing a smoke-filled, drink-fueled night through the capital. This version is pressed on classic black vinyl, but has been in high demand on the artist's own store - so act fast.

Review: The tale of Weird Herald - a lost band of the 60s hailing from the South Bay of California - is one of talent, misfortune and mystery. They embodiy the essence of West Coast psychedelia and folk-rock, though they never got the recognition they deserved. Their lone official releaseia 45 with 'Saratoga James' and 'Just Yesterday'iwas just the tip of the iceberg. Their unreleased album from 1968, recorded before tragedy struck with the death of guitarist Billy Dean Andrus, features haunting folk-rock, spacey acoustics and electric jams that recall Moby Grape and Jefferson Airplane. With tracks like 'Untitled' and 'David of Bijou,' the band's mellow, harmonic side shines, while songs like 'Reapin' Seasons' show their harder edge. Their album was tragically shelved due to management issues, but reel-to-reel copies survived, and now, over 50 years later, they're finally available.
