Guidance
If you need to use statistics presented by NACE category, it is important to know what activities are categorised under which NACE heading. You will also need this information if you have to determine how to classify the activity of a unit.
Using NACE Rev. 2.1
The NACE Rev. 2.1 structure, as set out in the regulation, is not sufficiently self-explanatory to allow you to classify each economic activity. Therefore, Eurostat and its partners in the European Statistical System (ESS) have developed introductory guidelines that describe the overall logic of the classification and explanatory notes about which activities are classified in each NACE Rev. 2.1 category.
For each category, the explanatory notes comprise a general note, which contains either additional information or a general description of the category, or a list of activities categorised as follows:
- includes: specifies the contents of the category
- includes also: a list of borderline cases, which belong to the described category
- excludes: a list of borderline cases, which do not belong to the described category. Excluded cases may be accompanied by a reference to the categories to which the excluded cases belong.
Using original NACE Rev. 2
For statistics compiled according to the original version of NACE Rev. 2, please refer to the NACE Rev. 2 manual published in 2008.
