Review: A timeless sample transmission is documented on this latest reissue from From The Voltz, a label whose 7" works specialise in such historicisms. In this case, we've the 1991 single 'They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)' by Pete Rock and CL Smooth, a mythical hip-hop duo from Mount Vernon, New York, whose foundational work in the East Coast rap and DJing scene enabled many later developments. With Rock especially often grouped among the best and most esteemed of rap producers alongside Premier and RZA, 'T.R.O.Y.' is emblematic of the era's distinctive jazz-hop breezes. In turn, the track sampled 'When She Made Me Promise', a relatively obscure Nassau funk group formed in 1969; the sample can be instantly clocked, save for its shrewd pitching down by a tone or two.

Review: The bright idea of British producer Tom Carauna, this mashed-up Wu-Tang/Fab Four was first released in 2011, and followed a legacy of infamous acapella reshakes of rap works by the named East Coast hip-hop collective. Retreading the bread-crumbed trails of producers Cecil Otter and Swiss Andy's 13 Chambers, which did the same for the punk band Fugazi, a profusion of rock-rap shred-spits followed, most of which kept Wu-Tang in tow whilst varying the rock greats providing the instrumental versions. Carauna returned to source with 'CREAM', a special selection from the original LP now culled by Tea Breaks; the tune combines elements of the already rather Tangy beat with the core piano riff from 'Let It Be', proving an incendiary combo.

Review: Masters At Work's discerning left brain Kenny Dope left but one of many crinkle-cut marks on the sliced hot potato of dance musical oral history with 'Supa'. Born in Brooklyn, Kenny emerged from the underground hip-hop scene before lending a crate-digger's mentation to his work, obsessively chopping samples by way of tri-wielded MPC60, MPC3000 and E-mu SP-1200 machines. We're not sure which went into the making of 'Supa' and its two comprising versions, but this is a serious funk-jungle precursor, medleying ATCQ-Lou Reed instrumentals contra the acapella line from Super Cat's 'Nuff Man A Dead' (1991). Drop either of these tunas into an otherwise +160BPM set for a breezy, halftime surprise, one that nonetheless maintains the rolling energy.

Review: Kendrick Lamar aka. K Dot is hip-hop's all-time crown-bearer for the 2010s. Last time we checked, the same was true for the 2020s too. Bridging both decades came To Pimp A Butterfly, which saw mammoth success upon its 2015 release. Though perhaps prematurely slapped with the "classic" label all too soon (and though this wasn't wrong), one good index of an all-time great album is the prevalence of affectionate initialisms among diehard fans: in no time at all, it became known as "TPAB". The Compton rapper had had a firm social conscience ever since the release of Section 80 and Good Kid, Mad City, and TPAB would continue to restitute the many racial and consumeristic ills of American society; unforgettably, a White House mutiny is depicted on the original front cover. Songs like 'I', 'Sing For Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst', 'King Kunta' and 'Institutionalized' revolutionised rap through every motif from G-funk bounce to freeform jazz. Review: After a much publicised and controversial court trial and abrupt acquittal, Young Thug is back with a full and comprehensive look back on the three mixtapes he released between 2015 and 2016, the collection of which were instrumental in shaping said Thugger's sound, and solidifying his now crown-jewel-guarded place in hip-hop. "Slime" in the Thug lexicography refers to ideas of loyalty and brotherhood, and is a word used within the rapper's own YSL collective and beyond; it recalls the slang phrase "my slime". And much like the amorphous goo that sounds to drip off each of these blasphemously sick beats, each consecutive mixtape tracks a continual honing and reshaping of his sound. With no major label restrictions, and with an unpolished non-veneer, these tunes were the real underground rap baggies that made Thugger's fame. It's only right that they each see a distinct splatter record, housed in a whopper box set.

The production, handled by Grant Shapiro, is an exercise in classic boom bap craftsmanship: chunky drum loops, hypnotic samples and that signature off-kilter bounce that Keith navigates so well. If anything, this release reminds us that Keith exists in his own creative galaxy, unbothered by trends or mainstream validation. The lead single, 'Super Hits', arrives with a video directed by Wayne Campbell, a frequent collaborator known for his work with Benny The Butcher. The tracklist alone reads like a cryptic message from Keith's mind: 'Pierre 9', 'Body Rock', 'Pissing', 'Jim Kelly'ieach title a doorway into his endlessly surreal world. J-Styles and Steve "Steve B" Baughman shape the sonics into something urgent and tactile, where every drum hit and vocal nuance pops. Keith, as always, plays by his own rules. He's been doing it for so long that any attempt to pin him down feels futile. Instead, you just press play and let the madness unfold.
