Review: Maverick Japanese producer Yasushi Ide's 2020 album Cosmic Suite was widely heralded and critically acclaimed. It now gets a welcome follow up with a second volume that features an a-list of international artists including Don Letts, Josh Milan, Japanese diva UA, Afrika Bambaataa and many more. As such all sorts of sounds from dub to house, broken beat to Afrobeat, freeform, jazz, post-punk and more feature. It is a future-facing collection of cuts all masterminded and conducted by Ide from his Grand Gallery HQ in Tokyo.

Review: 'Ain't No Sunshine' is one of the great soul songs. Originally recorded by Bill Withers, a legendary vocalist who simply walked away from the scene once he had said all he had to say, it has been covered many times. Here it is Yasushi Ide who steps up with a new version that comes featuring Ken Booth & U-Roy on this new 7" from Grand Gallery out of Japan. In original form, it's dubbed out to the max with oodles of echo and dark pads next to some original vocal toasting. 'Border Town' is then a more acoustic sound with gentle guitar strums and slow, persuasive rhythms.

Review: Last year Japanese street musician Yasushi Ide released Cosmic Suite 2 -New Beginning- to widespread acclaim, garnering plenty of attention thanks to the heavyweight cast of collaborators from Afrika Bambaataa,ADon Letts andAJeff Mills toADJ Krush andATony Allen. Now he's reached out to Grammy-winning sound engineer Steven Stanley to bring a heavyweight, premium grade dub treatment to the original album, and the results are astounding. The source material was eclectic to start with, which gives Stanley a wide scope to bring his own precision dubbing onto a wide variety of moods. Listen out for legendary drummer Style Scott laying down the beats under DJ Krush's cuts on 'Outer Space Dub' and lose yourself in the spiralling boom bap of Bambatta's appearance 'I'm Thinking, I'm Spacing Dub'.

Review: The extensive catalogue of Tokyo-based Grand Gallery is testament to their experience in piecing together an authoritative compilation, and so it goes on this exploration of Brazilian music from a Far-East perspective. Amongst the contributors to this collection are world-renowned percussionist Marcos Suzano, Katia B and Toyono, two prominent Brazilian singers. The repertoire on the collection spans classics such as 'Batucada' and 'Taj Mahal' as well as a lilting rendition of 'Golden Lady'. Recorded in Rio and bringing the unmistakable energy and passion of Brazilian music at its best, this is another high grade compilation from Grand Gallery.
