Review: Brighton was a very different place in 1979. Far more run down, but with that providing a home to far more alternative things than its gentrified soul tries to claim today. Out of this wind swept coastal city that had once seen better days, The Chefs emerged. Formed by friends at Brighton Polytechnic, with roots in a band called The Smartees (who had a song called 'Thrush', all about STIs, later redone by The Chefs), as that group fell apart this one was born. And now, thanks to Damaged Goods, we can relive some of the finest moments from four albums and around the same number of years as an active outfit. Firmly indie-pop, but with rockabilly, surf, post punk and new wave tones, fans of B52s and Talking Heads should definitely be all over this one.

Review: The Courettes return with their fourth album, The Soul of... The Fabulous Courettes, a bold evolution of their signature rock 'n' roll sound. This time, they expand their sonic palette, blending garage rock with doo-wop, Motown influences, and heart-tugging ballads. From the fuzz-filled opener 'You Woo Me' to the emotional closer 'For Your Love', the album strikes a perfect balance between raw energy and newfound sophistication. Collaborations with La La Brooks of The Crystals and renowned producer Richard Gottehrer elevate tracks like 'California' and 'Keep Dancing'. Lyrically, the band explores deeper, personal themes, particularly Flavia Couri's reflections on loss and family. With vintage production touches and vibrant instrumentation, The Courettes deliver their most mature and ambitious work to date.

Run Run Runaway (3:31)
Review: "The world's greatest two person rock 'n' roll ensemble, the next big thing - out now!" You can hear the delicious wit and parody in the copy sitting on The Courettes website, a band that have managed to do the unthinkable, swerving all trends to come up with music that simultaneously sounds self-aware in its retro nostalgia, yet incredibly fresh. Hailing from Denmark and Brazil - another curveball in many ways, California, which welcomes the additional vocals of La La Brookes, is a case in point. Jangly yet snarling garage rock, seductive art pop aimed at the charts, beach guitar stuff that supplants realism and experimentation for the doe-eyed dreaminess of, err, beach guitar stuff. Original as ever, it's more evidence that these guys may well be on the money with that description of themselves.

You Woo Me (3:06)
Review: The Fabulous Courettes' 'Shake!' unleashes a whirlwind of retro-inspired rock 'n' roll energy in a compact package. This Danish-Brazilian duo ignites the airwaves with their electrifying blend of garage rock and 1960s girl-group aesthetics. 'Shake!' is a sonic explosion of fuzzy guitar riffs, infectious drumbeats and irresistible vocal harmonies that compel listeners to move. With its raw, unbridled energy and infectious hooks, this track embodies the essence of rebellion and liberation and makes for a sonic adrenaline rush that transports listeners to the heyday of rock 'n' roll, leaving them craving more of its infectious charm.

Review: While The Galileo 7's records are all nostalgic by design - they specialise in making psych-pop and psych-rock that sounds so authentically 1960s that it should come with a Beatle wig and a free tab of acid - few are quite as heady, densely layered or hallucinatory as 2017's Tear Your Minds Wide Open. Here that album is given the expanded reissue treatment. Alongside all 12 tracks from the set - including the squally brilliance of 'The Mask', with its gnarled guitar riffs, Hammond stabs and elongated solos, and the Hendrix-esque 'Your Face Tomorrow' - you get eight bonus cuts. Expect a mix of instrumental mixes, alternate versions, band demos and home recordings.

Review: Medway's garage rock king Allan Crockford has credits flittering all the way back to the 80's including the likes of The Prisoners, Billy Childish's Thee Headcoats, The Solarflares, and even the OG line-up of the James Taylor Quartet, to name but a handful. Keeping sharp and busy, however, The Galileo 7 serves as his own passion project; melding 60s mod-beat garage rock with jangling psychedelic pop, leading to a sonic bickering between anthemic hooks and fuzzed out, twinkling guitar lines. Following two exceptional full-lengths released through Damaged Goods; 2017's Tear Your Minds Wide Open! and 2019's There Is Only Now, the collective return after a half-decade of respite to deliver another batch of lysergic, hazy power pop goodness, intended for the wannabe mod/hippie in all of us.

Review: Ah what could have been if people had just got them. In many ways, Talulah Gosh are the ultimate tale of youth misunderstood in band form - so much talent and so many ideas, but often delivered in such an uncompromising and unapologetic way many people simply tuned out, or walked away, without taking the time to actually listen to what was being said.

Now's the chance to do something about that if you were one of those naysayers. Was It Just A Dream? is a no-holds-barred collection of singles from the outfit's back catalogue, which makes one thing clear. If you're looking for a slightly trippy combination of 1960s girl groups, The Ramones and New Wave, this is it. You can't help but wonder if the troupe - who only stayed together for two years, disbanding in 1988 - might have enjoyed more success in today's irony-filled, remake loving world.

Review: Cult Kent garage rock legends Thee Headcoats have been at it a long time, but you might be forgiven for thinking they'd retired what with 22 years passing since their last album, I Am The Object Of Your Desire. It turns out you just can't keep a good band down, and Billy Childish and his gang are back with a whole new album of kick-ass tunes recorded with all the grit and grime you want and expect from a Headcoats record. The DNA of 60s beat, original r&b and lo-fi rock n roll is hardwired into the band, and they capture that energy perfectly on these 12 raucous new tracks.
