It's 1982 and the band Bad Brains have already been playing on the road for three years, getting "unofficially banned" from Washington D.C. clubs (hence the song title 'Banned in D.C.') and generally sticking their flag in what was the relatively unchartered territory we now know and love as hardcore punk. Cue the long-awaited debut album, self-titled of course, released on cassette only (long before that was a sign of retro-loving hipsters), and destined to soundtrack many a night at the legendary CBGBs.
Often referred to as The Yellow Tape, Bad Brains is Bad Brains at their rawest and least apologetic. Their first release that was longer than a single, it's at once a throwback to the formative years of both band and (sub)genre, and also a great example of how little things date when they are genuinely honest.

Review: 'The Omega Sessions' is a five-song EP recorded by Bad Brains in 1980 and released in 1997. The tracks were recorded and mixed at the original Omega Recording Studios in Rockville, Maryland, and overall, the EP contains early versions of songs which eventually appeared on later releases, including a revamped reading of 'I Against I.' This reissue marks the seventh release in the remaster campaign that is now upon us, re-launching the Bad Brains Records label imprint. Just five incendiary originals screamers, all the way through to the inimitable sass-monster that is 'Attitude', are enough to turn our brains mushy once more.

While originally honing their skills as funk/jazz group Mind Power, it wouldn't be until guitarist Dr. Know attended his first hardcore shows that an intense reinterpretation of punk tropes would be conceptualised within his madcap mind, leading to an incomparable collection of speedy, energetic and most important of all, musical compositions that would reshape the very foundations of a scene many stagedived from. Crammed full of raw, scuzzy classics such as 'Sailin' On' and 'Pay To Cum', yet interspersed with reggae and dub numbers including the tranquil 'Jah Calling', the Rastafarian hardcore ethos the band would coin on their seminal debut sent ripple effects still felt throughout the scene today. Not only their definitive work, but one of the most vital, pioneering and representative projects of the era.

Review: Originally distributed through SST Records in 1986, I Against I served as the seminal third full-length from Washington D.C. hardcore punk legends Bad Brains and is still the band's highest selling album to date. Noted for branching far beyond the already expanded parameters of reggae-infused punk, and embracing elements of soul, funk and alternative metal, the album was a shock at the time to the devout fans who were spoiled by the refinement of their sound on Rock For Light, yet in the decades since, the LP has been cited as an integral influence by members of Cro-Mags, Sepultura, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Rage Against The Machine to name a small handful, while artists such as Machine Head, Jeff Buckley and Lamb Of God have even covered the iconic title-track. Newly remastered with updated artwork, this Punk Note edition is a vital collection piece for both newcomers and fanboys who've already spun their OG copy to death.

Review: The highest selling album from reggae-tinged hardcore punk pioneers Bad Brains arrived courtesy of SST Records in 1986, and marked the band's further decimation of genre parameters. Following on from the major success of their refined sophomore endeavour Rock For Light, which cherry-picked some of their preceding self-titled debut LP's strongest cuts to re-record under the tutelage of The Cars' late, great Ric Ocasek, by the time it came to enter the studio to lay down what would grow into the iconic I Against I, the band had begun to embrace more outsider influences from the realms of soul, r&b and even funk metal; all genres that would inform the sonic makeup of their third full-length. With the title-track covered from everyone from Jeff Buckley to Lamb Of God to Denzel Curry, the utter sonic fearlessness exuded throughout scoffed in the face of hardcore purists who lambasted the effort upon release, while its insidious influence can still be heard today from Rage Against The Machine all the way up to hardcore's modern day flag flyers Turnstile.

Review: Following the major success of 1983's seminal sophomore effort Rock For Light, in which reggae-hardcore heroes Bad Brains would work studiously under The Cars' Ric Ocasek, and even re-record some of their self-titled debut LP's strongest cuts such as 'Sailin' On' and 'Banned In D.C.'; the hard left turn of their now acclaimed third full-length I Against I initially shocked many a hardcore purists upon its initial 1986 release. Arriving courtesy of SST Records, the album showcased an even further disregard for genre or scene parameters than the band had exuded up to that point, absorbing elements of funk, soul, r&b and, most notably, alternative metal, with the material falling somewhere in line with the likes of Living Colour, yet a far scuzzier version. While early reception was somewhat maligned and controversial, with the band even back-peddling on 1989's Quickness, there's no denying the sprawling influence the record has had in the decades since, with covers of the title-track coming from Jeff Buckley to Denzel Curry, while its sonic presence can be heard all the way up to modern hardcore stalwarts such as Turnstile. Not to mention the iconic lore behind the vocals to 'Sacred Love' being recorded by H.R. over the phone from prison while serving time on a marijuana distribution charge. How can you get any more hardcore punk reggae than that?

Review: The Youth Are Getting Restless serves as much as a Bad Brains greatest hits collection as it does live album. Recorded at Amsterdam's iconic Paradiso Theatre in 1987 whilst touring, 'I Against I'; this legendary performance wouldn't be officially released until 1990, arriving after Quickness. The collection of material here is crafted from the band's first three (and arguably most definitive albums), with several classic cuts from the self-titled and, 'Rock For Light', such as, 'Sailin' On', 'Banned In D.C.', and, 'Pay To Cum', played at blistering pace with their trademark incomparable energy. There's also, of course, some space made between the hardcore punk chaos for more chilled-out reggae-indebted sequences, including a cover of Dennis Brown's, 'Revolution', as well as a rearranged medley of 'She's a Rainbow' and 'Day Tripper', by The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, respectively. While the ensuing decade and projects that came with it would be steeped in line-up shifts and internal strife, this live collection is a flashback to a simpler time when H.R. was the frenetic frontman at the top of the hardcore food-chain.

Review: Legendary alto saxman Marion Brown played on seminal albums by the likes of John Coltrane. For that reason, few sit close to him when it comes to the creative powerhouses of the 1960s avant-garde jazz movement. His Porto Norvo album was recorded during a 1967 session in the Netherlands and is regarded as one of his best works. Bassist Maarten van Regteben Altena and drummer Han Bennink joined the session and after it being out of print for many decades before now it gets a long overdue reissue on high-quality wax. This latest pice, Creative Improvisation Ensemble, is from Marion Brown and Leo Smith who explore an experimental and avant-garde world of challenging jazz. It is freeform, unbound by rules and expectations and very much keeps you on your toes as the saxophones burst to life, express tortured emotions and peel away to nothing. Some cuts are more heavily percussive with tribal drums like 'And Then They Danced' and others are persuasive numbers that make you move.

Now newly remastered, the album radiates infectious grooves and heartfelt lyricism with its silky vocals and the tight, funky instrumentation all full of undeniable charm and timeless appeal. Standout cuts like the titular track and 'Just Me and You' showcase his band's impeccable musicianship and knack for crafting irresistibly catchy hooks. With its lush production and soul-stirring melodies, Your Love Is My Desire is a quite gem in the realm of classic soul.

Review: Issued on CD by Ace in 1999, Eramus Hall's Your Love Is My Desire was subject to instant popular scrutiny. Though it was recorded in late 1978 by the soul and funk group - who later went on to record another album, Gohead, and many singles - the lone figure on the album cover misleadingly implied that "Hall" was a single person. Despite its obvious stylistic derivation from Funkadelic and co., Hall's first album is still a landmark album; fans of smooth late-70s soul will love it for the title track, and 'Just Me 'n' You'.
