Review: If the debut EP from art rock ensemble Ugly seems recognizable, it's because most tracks have previously been released as singles over the past couple of years. However, experiencing them as a cohesive project feels immensely satisfying. The EP feels remarkably polished and confident, showcasing well-crafted arrangements. The opening track, 'The Wheel', is a sprawling seven-minute piece that shifts through various phases. It begins with a stunning acapella before transitioning into an Animal Collective-inspired section with frenetic, quirky vocals and an energetic drumming performance that drives the momentum. 'Sha' offers a refreshing, laid-back change with its country influences, featuring smooth guitar lines and subtle harmonies. The unreleased 'Icy Windy Sky' shines with its entrancing fingerpicked guitars and soothing, tight vocals, building to an epic crescendo. Closing track 'I'm Happy You're Here' wraps the EP beautifully, combining serene vocals with intricate arrangements, creating a nostalgic and fulfilling finish. Review: Ultraista put out a highly acclaimed album in March and now it gets remixed by some superb underground electronic artists. Floating Points ditches his intricate prog and synth work of recent times to turn in a nice glitchy garage mix. American FaltyDL then soars up to the heavens on nice soulful vocal and shimmering drums and Zero 7 goes for a slower, more downtempo vibe for chilled home sessions. After a flurry of jungle percussion and drums from Crate Classics, Leifur James closes things down with intricate electronics and pensive synths. No two tunes here are alike, and all are essential.

Review: 15 studio albums, 84 singles and nine EPs. U2's legacy is up there with the biggest in rock & roll history. The original LP, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, is number 11 in the band's running order, and when it was released in 2004 it reflected the group doubling down on their transition away from more experimental and alternative rock sounds, into more mainstream aesthetics befitting their long-since earned stadium status. Here we are late-2024 and the Irish outfit bestow How To Reassemble An Atomic Bomb on their legions of loyal fans as a tie-in with both Record Store Day and Black Friday, and to mark the record's 20th anniversary. Not simply a re-release, but rather a revisit to ideas and tones of the time, even if you've got the previous versions this is well worth a punt.

Review: In many ways it's hard to get a fix on U2's 90s period. It's as though they folded time between their breakthrough 80s albums and the comfortable middle age period post the turn of the millennium. However, Zooropa remains a wildly exciting album which saw Bono and his buddies weren't afraid to mess with the formula and embrace what was happening outside of their mainstream rock bubble. There are some surprising risks taken and yet their gargantuan song craft remains undiminished. On this 30th anniversary pressing there's also some bonus remixes tucked onto side four, bringing Oakenfold's equally supersized Perfecto sound into the mix.

Review: First released in 1981, and garnering the 100,000-plus sales needed to hit Gold certification pretty quickly after arrival - a feat which, back in the glory days of charts, was still only enough for you to peak at #4 in the albums league - at the time this was a case of Ultravox, here in the height of the Midge Ure years, taking the electronic explorations that defined the previous two full-length records, Systems of Romance and Vienna, even further, returning to the same Cologne studio to achieve that quality and feeling.
Of course, there are still shades of the band as they were in formative, mid-1970s years, which many still forget was a far (far) rockier beast. Nevertheless, the synths make the most lasting impression here, with the LP somehow sounding kind of stark, a little cold and distant, perhaps even enigmatic, yet full and in many ways fun.

Review: The sixth studio album by British synth pop legends Ultravox landed in 1982, and peaked at an impressive number six in an albums chart that was still highly competitive. By December that year, the record had clocked up more than 100,000 copies, earning a Gold certificate from the BPI, while also ranking in US and German hit lists around the same time. Notable as it saw George Martin (affectionally known to some as The Fifth Beatle) stepping up to the helm, this veteran apparently claimed the band were "the most musical" he'd worked with in years. Agree or not, the record is bold and theatrical, at times taking us out on the town in bleep-happy Sheffield (or some such synth domain), in other moments inviting us to partake in a strange electronic cabaret.

Review: Four piece outfit The Umbrellas call themselves "renegade romantics" and they are adept at making irresistible indie pop hymns. 2021 marked the year they dropped their successful breakout debut album and in the wake of that they went on national tours and got plenty of critical acclaim. Fairweather Friend is the difficult second album that didn't prove so and brought yet more lush and candied melodies with confident guitar, great vocals and plenty of studio finesse. Not bad for a group that met at San Francisco record emporium Amoeba Music.

Review: The Umlauts like to play by the rules about as much as you enjoy a needle in the eye. A formidable force of opposition against a music industry which has largely been lost to the corporates - big money is indeed coming for culture - the nine-piece coldwave mini-army kick against everything from labels to marketing, and have so far done pretty well by not adhering to those practices. Two EPs deep - U (2021) and Another Fact (2022) - and we land at Slags. Ten tracks that comprise the best of the preceding extended players, and equally captivating new material. From the Neo-Kosmische of 'Um Politik', to the gritty, synth punk of 'Mad Blue Love', the distorted, compressed throb and loops of 'Boiler Suits & Combat Boots', and the knife-edge atmosphere of epic closer 'Another Fact', here's a ride you won't forget in a hurry.
