Review: Dense, brooding riffs, macro-melodic tidal waves... Pelican's signature blend of post-metal-sludge is a piscine gulping of tsnuami-sound. Formed in the proverbially thalassic sonic expanse of Chicago, this band flocked together in 2000 at the core whim of guitarists Trevor Shelley de Brauw and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec. Radically, Pelican initially described their approach to music creation as "rule-free", mirroring the perception of 1990s Chicago as a barbaric "free-for-all" in which an empty beaker of potential was confronted, and partially refilled, by the oceanic outpouring that was experimental post-rock. Long after their debut Australasia (2003) and career-migrations such as City Of Echoes and Arktika, came Flickering Resonance (2022), a record which was deemed to reflect a more "humanistic side of the band." The bleak landscapes evoked on 'Cascading Crescent' and 'Indelible' are no discourager for this band; they still maintain cavalcades of riffing stridencies and amphibious drumming.

Review: The cult Kraut/psych/folk/drone outfit France, celebrated for crafting sound that transcends typical genre constraints with atmospheric richness, make an unprecedented leap in their latest release. Teaming up with French underground group Standard In-Fi and Belgian label a1000p, the band embraces an unconventional approach to both performance and recording. The idea was born from a chance encounter between the band and Mim, the sound engineer behind a1000p, who proposed bringing his studio gear directly to a live show. After a failed attempt at a traditional studio session, they settled on something more radical: recording live in an open-air amphitheatre in the French countryside. In 2022, Mim partnered with the Rituale Festival to make the dream a reality, arranging a concert at St. Roman de Codieres, near his vineyards. With the amphitheatre nestled in a valley, Mim meticulously set up his equipment, deploying an array of mics to capture both the immediate and distant sounds of the performance. The resulting sound is nothing short of remarkableian enveloping blend of rawness and finely tuned acoustics with the recording process, intricate and expansive, ensuring every subtle detail of the band's sonic journey is preserved. Whether it's the swirling folk melodies or the layered drones and psych flourishes, the mix elevates their sound to new heights here.

Review: Originally released in 2005, Feral Hymns would serve as the 11th (and true final) full-length from Washington D.C. devout Dischord Records alumni Lungfish. Having released every album apart from their debut with Minor Threat/Fugazi visionary Ian MacKaye's label, they were easily one of the longest lasting on the roster when considering the longevity of their peers and labelmates in say Jawbox or Shudder To Think. Continuing their consistent aura of experimental first wave emo stripped down to caustic, murky minimalist compositions, the material sticks to their established formula but embittered by the passage of time, while the commitment to their signature style is also more illuminating in hindsight, as the group would semi-disband, or at least cease writing/recording following this release, with members branching off into other projects. While 2012's A.C.R. 1999 is often perceived as their 12th LP, that release was comprised of older recording sessions, making it technically a compilation and Feral Hymns their definitive swansong.
