Brighton was a very different place in 1979. Far more run down, but with that providing a home to far more alternative things than its gentrified soul tries to claim today. Out of this wind swept coastal city that had once seen better days, The Chefs emerged. Formed by friends at Brighton Polytechnic, with roots in a band called The Smartees (who had a song called 'Thrush', all about STIs, later redone by The Chefs), as that group fell apart this one was born. And now, thanks to Damaged Goods, we can relive some of the finest moments from four albums and around the same number of years as an active outfit. Firmly indie-pop, but with rockabilly, surf, post punk and new wave tones, fans of B52s and Talking Heads should definitely be all over this one.
