Federico CARBONE Curriculum
Federico Carbone is a Researcher (Rtd-A) in Numismatics at the Department of Cultural Heritage Sciences, University of Salerno.
In the same university he began his training, in 2013 he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Archaeology with a thesis in Museology and Numismatics, and in 2016 he obtained a PhD in Methods and Methodologies of Archaeological, Historical-Artistic and Territorial Systems Research with a thesis in Numismatics entitled ‘Monetary Uses at Gortyna and Phaistos: chronologies and production aspects’. In the same year he was awarded the INC Travel scolarship for his research entitled ‘The bronze coinage of Velia’.
In 2017 he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Italian Archaeological School in Athens. In 2020 she obtained the Diploma of High Specialisation and Research in Cultural Heritage awarded at the end of the course 'Scuola del Patrimonio' (curriculum Management and Organisation of Museums and Museum Poles) of the Fondazione Scuola per i Beni e le Attività Culturali of the Italian Ministry of Culture.
He carried out study and research stays abroad: first as an Erasmus student at the Universidad de Salamanca, then as an MAE-Crui scholarship holder at the Italian Cultural Institute in Athens. With an ERASMUS+ grant, he then stayed at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Münzkabinett der Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. He was awarded research grants by the International Numismatic Council, staying at the Cabinet des Médailles of the Bibliotheque royale de Belgique and the Department of Coins and Medals of the British Museum. He has carried out further research periods in Germany, Greece, Spain and the United Kingdom.
He collaborates with national and international museum institutions on digital projects and museum layouts, including the Archaeological Park of Paestum and Velia, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, the Cabinet des Médailles de la Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Numismatic Museum of Athens.
He participated in international meetings and was responsible for the organisation of the conference ‘Monetary and Social Aspects of Hellenistic Crete’ in 2018 in Athens, an event that received the medal of representation of the President of the Italian Republic.
Between 2006 and 2015 he took part in research and excavation campaigns in Italy (Montereggi, Fratte, Paestum, Pontecagnano, Santa Maria di Pierno, Santa Maria a Rota) in Greece (Athens, Phaistos) and Turkey (Clazomene-Urla).
Since the academic year 2021/22 he has been teaching Numismatics for the Master's Degree in Archaeology at the University of Bari ‘Aldo Moro’.
Since 2022/23 he has been Professor of Numismatics at the School of Specialisation in Archaeological Heritage at the University of Basilicata, Matera campus.
On 08/06/2022 he obtained the qualification to hold the position of associate professor in the field of Numismatics (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale, 2021-2023).
In May 2025, he was a visiting scholar at the Institut für Archäologie of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
His main interests include the analysis of coin production techniques in the ancient world and the study of the coinage of some of the major cities of ancient Lucania: Paestum and Elea-Velia. In collaboration with foreign research institutions, he promotes studies of the main mints on the island of Crete in the Classical and Hellenistic periods, in particular Axos, Phaistos, Gortyna and Lyttos. He is engaged in the publication of material from excavations and museum collections. He is interested in digital humanities applied to the field of numismatics and economics of the ancient world.
He is a member of the editorial board of the Annali of the Italian Institute of Numismatics (top ranking journal).
