Academic Profile

Throughout my teaching and research career, I have focused my activity on several aspects of the Germanic languages and cultures during the Middle Ages. My interests are firmly rooted in philology and linguistics, though I have also engaged with topics in the field of philology that are ideologically and politically relevant today. My main areas of research include:

- the Way of the Goths to Literacy as Search for Identity and the establishment, during the Carolingian period, of a clear awareness of vernacular German, its functions, its dignity, and the reason for its existence, not only in historical and political terms, but above all in theological terms;

- specific aspects of textual and literary criticism of German texts from the Carolingian and Ottonian periods (Lay of Hildebrand, Muspilli, Otfrid von Weißenburg, Notker III of Saint Gall);

- the Old Saxon poem Heliand (9th century);

- the activity of translation during the Germanic Middle Ages, particularly in the Saxon area (the Old Saxon version of the pseudo-Beda homily) and in the Old High German area (especially I focused on the translation methods of Notker III of Saint Gall);

- communication problems in the Germanic Middle Ages, in particular issues of oral mutual intelligibility among speakers of early Germanic languages;

- structural and functional aspects of the use of multilingualism in medieval German poetry (De Henrico, Carmina Burana);

- specific etymological and semantic issues of Germanic languages (in particular linguistic and cultural aspects of germ. *arga- and of Old High-German friunt);

- rare evidence of linguistic and cultural contacts between the German and the Arab worlds during the late Middle Ages;

- the development of Germanic legends in Reformation and Counter-Reformation Germany (Lay of Hürnen Seyfrid);

- the image of the Goths in Torquato Tasso’s Il re Torrismondo;

- the modern reception of medieval Germanic texts (The Lay of the Nibelungs, The Battle of Maldon);

- the heated debate that arose within classical studies in Italy during the early decades of the 20th century concerning the value and the meaning of “German philology”;

- Anti-German sentiment in Italian universities during the First World War;

- Italian translations of Tacitus’ Germania by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and Massimo Bontempelli;

- the German language during the Third Reich (Lingua Tertii Imperii).

Since when I was hired as Research fellow at the University of Florence, and afterwards as professor at the University of Salerno, I have been regularly teaching in courses on introduction to comparative studies of the Germanic languages, and on textual criticism of medieval Germanic literature. Moreover, I have been dedicating particular attention to philological and linguistic issues of Anglo-Saxon and Germanic prose and poetry in specific courses.

- 1983/1984 academic year: I conducted study and research at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität of Frankfurt am Main, sponsored by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst of Bonn (DAAD);

- March 5th, 1985: I graduated with honours (110/110 cum laude) in Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”;

- July-August 1985: I conducted study and research at the Karl Marx-University of Leipzig (Alma Mater) sponsored by the Centro Thomas Mann of Rome (German Democratic Republic);

- 1987/1988 academic year: I started off my PhD in Germanic Philology at the University of Florence;

- 1989/1990 academic year: I did research at the Freie Universität of Berlin, as part of my PhD program;

- Starting from the 1989/1990 academic year, appointed as Research Fellow of Germanic Philology (disciplinary group 48) at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Florence;

- From November 1st, 1998: Associate Professor of Germanic Philology (disciplinary sector L 20 A, later L-FIL-LET/15) at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of Salerno;

- From October 1st, 2005: Full Professor of Germanic Philology (now disciplinary sector GERM-01/A) at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of Salerno.
