ASTM Digital Library includes their books & manuals, journals, and conference proceedings (Selected Technical Papers, or STPs). ASTM Standards remain at the Compass platform. The UC system has 8 campuses participating in the ASTM subscription: UCB, UCD, UCI, UCLA, UCM, UCR, UCSB, and UCSD.   

Reasons cited for the move to the new platform include:

  • Improved discoverability through enhanced search functionality, recommendations, and filtering
  • Mobile responsive design for adaptability on any device
  • Collaborative community ecosystem via Silverchair

On September 2, 2025, Airiti upgraded their Airiti eRead eBooks platform. Six UC campuses have books at Airiti (UCB/LBL, UCI, UCLA, UCSB, UCSC, UCSD). The Airiti eJournals platform (TEPS) is not impacted. 

New Site Features

  • Upgraded full text search functionality
  • More personalized features, including RSS Feeds, bookmarking, tagging, reading history, saved notes
  • Display of most borrowed books by campus users

URLs

The platform will remain at the same URL (https://www.airitibooks.com) which will continue to work for both the homepage, and the book title level URLs. Users may notice they are now redirected to a new campus-specific subdomain; however we will continue to use the universal URL in the catalog, which works for all customers.

Added Content: Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Burney Newspapers Collection, Part II

Following discussions during the SCP advisory committee (SCP-AC) and the committee’s recommendation, SCP will suspend maintaining the UC -er OCLC holdings.

The vast majority (74%) of shared electronic resources are managed through the Ex Libris Alma Community Zone (CZ). CZ bibliographic records either lack OCLC numbers, have multiple OCLC numbers or have incorrect OCLC numbers (for example, the print OCLC number).

Only 26% of NZ e-resources are from WorldCat (with OCLC numbers).

With budget cuts and subscription cancellations, maintaining e-resource holdings in OCLC increases SCP workload.

CDL Job Opening: Assistant Director for Systemwide Licensing https://cdlib.org/cdlinfo/2025/08/27/cdl-job-opening-assistant-director-for-systemwide-licensing/ Wed, 27 Aug 2025 16:16:26 +0000 https://cdlib.org/?p=64077 The Assistant Director for Systemwide Licensing is responsible for stewarding the California Digital Library activities related to systemwide licensing for digital scholarly content, on behalf of the University of California ten campus library system. Reporting to the CDL Director of Shared Collections, and in collaboration with the CDL Assistant Director for Open Access, the incumbent holds a leadership position within a team responsible for negotiating, implementing, and assessing business agreements for digital resources worth in excess of $60 million, including 400+ multi-year contracts with 100+ vendors. 

As an experienced manager of both people and processes, the Assistant Director for Systemwide Licensing oversees a team responsible for all stages of the electronic resources lifecycle, including licensing, acquisitions, cataloging, maintenance, and assessment, for systemwide conventional subscriptions and purchases, and works collaboratively with the Assistant Director for Open Access Agreements to support the lifecycle of resources acquired via open publishing agreements. In all this work, the Assistant Director actively advances UC principles, goals, and aims for access to scholarly content to support UC research and teaching. The Assistant Director for Systemwide Licensing facilitates collaborative decision-making among UC Libraries campus collection managers and librarians responsible for shared content licensing, including through the development of cost-sharing models. Possessing a commitment to proactively promoting and embracing diversity in ideas, people and organizations, the incumbent will model and lead within a highly collaborative working and learning environment. 

The incumbent provides strategic and operational direction to CDL’s licensing unit, managing a distributed team of hybrid and onsite staff (UCOP Oakland headquarters and UC San Diego Libraries), responsible for business negotiation and ongoing management of shared digital resources, including the CDL Shared Cataloging Program.

California residents from outside the Bay Area who wish to work remotely will be considered. This position is not available for sponsorship.

Cycle 14 (2025) Collection Comparison Reports Now Available https://cdlib.org/cdlinfo/2025/08/05/cycle-14-2025-collection-comparison-reports-now-available/ Tue, 05 Aug 2025 19:08:24 +0000 https://cdlib.org/?p=63997 WEST is pleased to announce that the fourteenth archiving cycle disclosure process is complete, and the Cycle 14 (2025) annual collection comparison reports are now available for WEST members to download in AGUA. These reports were generated for each member that submitted a file of records for the Cycle 14 & 15 collections analysis in 2024. All members also have access, at any time, to the All Archived Titles Report and On Demand Collection Comparison report in AGUA. The AGUA User Manual includes detailed instructions for using these pages.

As a reminder, beginning last year we made Metadata Validation Reports available under your, “My Institution’s Reports” section on AGUA. These reports highlight areas where your holdings data had a discrepancy with WorldCat holdings data, and can serve as a starting point for any data remediation efforts your institution would like to engage in. Note that in some cases reported “errors” are merely an outcome of local practice, and so won’t warrant correction. These are informational reports only and no action is required from your institution.

New Group Selection in the On Demand Comparison Report And New On Demand Analytics Report https://cdlib.org/cdlinfo/2025/08/01/new-group-selection-in-the-on-demand-comparison-report-and-new-on-demand-analytics-report/ Fri, 01 Aug 2025 16:16:40 +0000 https://cdlib.org/?p=63964 This year, as part of AGUA Development Phase 7, in addition to the New Fields Available in the WEST All Archived Titles Report and the development to Download AGUA Reports More Easily, the AGUA Development Team completed an enhancement to enable libraries to compare against the holdings of pre-defined groups and generate reports without an input file! You can read more about AGUA Development (what it is, why we do it, and what goes into it) in our Brief Introduction to AGUA Development

This development both adds a new “group” selection to the On Demand Comparison Report, and adds an entirely new On Demand Analytics Report tool which members can use to create reports without first providing an input file. 

On Demand Analytics Report

The On Demand Analytics Report allows users to generate an “on demand” analytics report by drawing from AGUA’s archived and unarchived titles data sets. The output reports may be used to make local decisions about duplicates and to identify titles that have not yet been retained for WEST or another shared print program.

Group Scoping 

As mentioned above, both the Comparison reports and Analytics Reports can now be scoped by “group”, meaning that users will only see holdings for other institutions which are members of the selected group. Groups can be combined using the OR or AND buttons to see respectively either the holdings of multiple groups or only the holdings of institutions which are members of all selected groups.

New Fields Available in the WEST All Archived Titles Report! https://cdlib.org/cdlinfo/2025/08/01/new-fields-available-in-the-west-all-archived-titles-report/ Fri, 01 Aug 2025 16:09:24 +0000 https://cdlib.org/?p=63960 Every two years, when not actively engaged in collections analysis, WEST modifies and enhances the AGUA collection analysis and decision support system to add new features, reports, and tools or improve existing ones. These development phases typically include several projects, but the exact number varies depending on size and complexity. You can read more about AGUA Development (what it is, why we do it, and what goes into it) in our Brief Introduction to AGUA Development. This year, WEST is currently engaged in AGUA Development Phase 7.

As part of Development Phase 7, the AGUA Development Team has completed an enhancement to add five additional fields (columns) in the All Archived Titles report and one additional field (column) in the Archived Titles export from the On Demand Collection Comparison report and Analytics report!

Now in addition to the useful information already available in the All Archived Titles Report, members can also view, sort, and filter on validation information:

  • Validation action (583$a)
  • Validation level (583$i)
  • Completeness validation notes (583$z)
  • Condition validation notes (583$z)

For example, if you wanted to see all titles archived by WEST which were validated at the issue level, you can download the WEST All Archived Titles Report (link) and use Excel to filter to only items which contain the words “issue level” in Column M, Validation Level. This could provide you with a targeted list of titles to consider for deselection locally with a high degree of confidence that the WEST Archived title will be there when you need it!

Additionally, we’ve added a column for estimated volumes to both the All Archived Titles Report and the On Demand Collection Comparison and Analytics archived reports. This field looks at the first and last years in the holdings statement of a given record and compares them to the published run in order to estimate the number of volumes held. This field can help members understand the length of a given title or run, which could help members prioritize titles for gap filling, estimate space savings when deselecting, and more!

2025 WEST Member Meeting Recap: Why WEST Now? For those of you who were not able to attend, or for those who’d like to review some of the presentations or panel discussion, the recording and slides are now available for review, linked here and on our Documents and Presentations page.

WEST Executive chair Jo Anne Newyear-Ramirez welcomed WEST members to the annual member meeting and spoke to the value of WEST, and the value of collaboration broadly, in these uncertain times.

WEST has become a model for how shared print initiatives represent our most sustainable path forward for preserving knowledge for future generations. We are at a point in time where collection collaboration such as shared print initiatives are even more critical… Through your institution’s membership in WEST you have demonstrated that, rather than each of us maintaining duplicate copies of the same materials, libraries can coordinate their retention decisions and collaborate to ensure that comprehensive collections are preserved while reducing individual institutional burdens.

We had a lively panel discussion covering a broad range of topics related to our theme of: Why WEST Now? Protecting our foundations in times of turmoil and uncertainty.

Some of they key points that emerged were:

On assessing the value of consortial memberships from the library perspective:

  • Generally, there is a need to be smart and cost effective with what memberships we choose to maintain right now 
    • One speaker created a matrix which she shared with attendees to help assess current memberships
    • There is also a lot of interest in ROI impact analyses services for libraries
      • Need to help libraries show what their value is and what they’re providing to the university 
  • It can also be important to look at organizational values in conjunction with the values of the consortia
    • If a consortia’s values fit with a library’s strategic priorities this makes it easier to articulate why the membership is important and what we’re doing to collaborate with other libraries on a given priority
      • This is really compelling to admin and helps with communication 
  • There is an opportunity for consortia to create accountability structures for adoption of best practices and shared policies

On assessing the value of consortial memberships from the consortial perspective:

  • Times of scarce resources are when consortia really need to articulate what they can offer and what they provide (aka what we do and why we do it)
  • When working with small or mid-sized libraries it is critically important to be able to articulate personalized value
  • One of the most beneficial things that come out of library consortia is connecting libraries with one another – connecting expertise / experience and building the community
  • Opportunities for “just in time” and “just what’s needed” education are extremely valuable right now
    • There is a need to consider how we elevate education and training to a level where members can participate more fully

On the value of WEST specifically:

  • With WEST the ability to collaboratively approach collections is a huge opportunity
    • Many libraries are currently trying to determine how we find space and where we make room – WEST helps libraries make these calculations while maintaining access
    • It’s possible for libraries to articulate clearly in dollars what WEST saves them (or could save them) in terms of space that no longer needs to be dedicated to journal collections because of assured access through WEST partner libraries

Shared Print Round-Up: Q2 2025 https://cdlib.org/cdlinfo/2025/07/29/quarter-2-shared-print-round-up/ Tue, 29 Jul 2025 22:52:47 +0000 https://cdlib.org/?p=63927 Over the last quarter we’ve had many exciting updates, webinars, and articles from community members across shared print! Below is a roundup of shared print news and events from March through June.

In March, Liz Hayden, Associate University Librarian for Content and Access at the University of Ottawa, published Communication in Shared Print at Academic Libraries: Report of Findings. This was a summary report of a project Liz undertook which explored, “how member libraries communicate shared print initiatives to stakeholders and whether a communication and change management plan could enhance the successful integration and normalization of shared print efforts within a library’s collection strategy and practice.” Many members of the shared print community across the US and Canada participated in the interviews and survey that informed these findings. 

Then, in early June North/Nord held a webinar on Pan-Canadian Perspectives on Shared Print, highlighting what shared print programs across Canada are already doing and opportunities for future work in shared print. The recording is available for viewing on their website.

Also in June, CRL held the 2025 Print Archive Network (PAN) Annual Forum on Friday, June 27th, where we heard a variety of updates about work happening both at the regional and bi-national levels, and enjoyed several presentations, including a presentation from CDL’s own Miranda Bennet. Planning for EAST’s Future (Tina Baich, Director, Eastern Academic Scholars’ Trust)

      • An overview of EAST’s current planning work, looking both at their work to increase the feasibility of commitment renewal for members and investigations into making membership valuable, in the present and for the future.

Charting New Constellations: Community Strategies for Diversity and Inclusivity in Shared Print (Jason Price, Director of License & Open Access Services, SCELC Library Consortium)

      • Takeaways from SCELC and EAST’s recent grant project investigating diversity in shared print participant title holdings & retention at minority serving institutions. The presentation covered both the retention commitment patterns that surfaced as well as opportunities for possible collective action.

Shared Print Partnership Update (Heather Weltin (Bridge-Year Executive Committee) and Miranda Bennett (Incoming Executive Committee))

      • A brief refresher and overview of the Shared Print Partnership bridge year, information about the incoming Executive Committee, and what’s next for the SPP.

Preservation Stewards: GPO’s Permanent Print Retention Partners (Abby McDermott, Collection Management Librarian, Library Services & Content Management, US Government Publishing Office)

      • Information about what preservation stewards are, what they collect, preservation steward commitments, and condition requirements for these collections. In addition to an update that Preservation Steward inventories will be ingested into the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP) so the CGP can serve as the program’s shared print registry.

Assessing the U.S. Federal Documents Program (Heather Weltin, Collections Strategist, HathiTrust)

      • An overview of the history and value of the federal documents program, as well as information on an assessment of the program and group activities, with findings and next steps.

Data Integration that Delivers: How ILL Metrics Enhance Shared Print Value and Integrity (Jenny Rosenfeld, Product Manager, OCLC)

      • An investigation into the questions: Is it interesting and meaningful to combine ILL data with shared print data? AND How does ILL data add value to shared print? Along with suggested future steps and an update on adding shared print data into Choreo Insights.
