Review: Acclaimed DJ, singer, remixer and songwriter DJ KAWASAKI is a beat maker who does it all from broken beat and nu jazz to hip hop and deep house. Bridge Into The Future: Recreated Tracks finds him cooking up his own newly constructed takes on a range of classic source tunes. It makes for a broad and brilliant collection. 'I'm So On Your Mind' (feat Rasiyah - DJ Kawasaki Recreated Disco mix) is a gloriously sunny sound with louche breakbeats at its core, and the Diana Ross classic 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' (feat N'Dea Davenport - DJ Kawasaki Recreated Latin Disco mix) becomes a salsa tinged and gloriously steamy anthem.

Review: This is an interesting 7" from Japan's Lawson Entertainment that blends vintage soulful vibes with cutting-edge beats. Grooveman Spot is behind the A-side remix and is a revered name in the Japanese underground scene who reimagines 'Mygem' with his signature touch by layering jazzy chords, funky basslines and crisp percussion for a groove-infused trip that merges classic hip-hop with contemporary techniques. On the flip is a low-slung and sun kissed sound, 'Mirror Ball (feat Chico Carlito & Kiki Vivi Lily)' with lush melodies and innocent vocal sounds.

Review: DJ Ryow aka Smooth Current is a Japanese DJ and producer known for his hip-hop and r&b remixes. 'Re:Strain Of Stairs', as the title suggests, reinterprets the song 'Strain Of Stairs' by Japanese rock band The Pillows on the A-side, bringing a loose-hipped drum workout to the ordeal. On the B, meanwhile, Ryow goes all out on a new original featuring Kim Hill, 'Ain't Even Like Me', a song which first debuted online a least four years ago - it's an impressively-made production in contemporary r&b, with exquisite harmonies from Hill.

Review: Hiroshi II Hiroshi was a one-off project from Hiroshi Fujiwara and Hiroshi Kawanbe which came out on File Records in 1993. It's a flawless gem of island boogie smoothed out to a gentle lull, buffeted along by breezy guitar licks and mellow Rhodes, quite happily reclining on a melodious phrase or two for as long as necessary to ensure ultimate relaxation. 'H2O' in particular is a float-adrift masterpiece, while 'Beauty & Beast + Bagel (Dub)' teases a little intrigue in amidst the placid waters without kicking up a fuss. Now it's being repressed on appropriately clear blue vinyl, bringing a perfect nugget of chill-out charm within reach for all your lounging, poolside or hammock-based needs.

Review: Ja-Ge George is a rather little-known dancehall artist who has turned out only a few releases over the last 20 years. He hails from Japan and is part of the Rub-A-Dub Market crew and now he is back with a new single that comes on Far Eastern label Lawson Entertainment. 'Down Beat Rule' blends new school and contemporary raga and dancehall into a classic-sounding cut with some rhythmic vocal stabs, natty, polished chords and broken tumbling beats to amp up any crowd. On the flip, it becomes a high-energy jungle workout powered by blistering breakbeats.

Review: Deep house on a 7" is a rather rather thing but this 45rpm certainly is worth your while. It is the first we have heard from Jazztronik, all producer and keysman Ryota Nozaki, since his Universal Language album last year. He has been at this now for 24 years and brings all that know how to these two jams. 'Evoke' is a lively broken beat workout with squelchy bass and improvised jazz keys that are restless and energizing with rich leads. 'Beat Hopper' (The 3rd Session) appears on the flip with more innovative keys and party-pumping broken beats. A tasteful duo for sure.

Embellished with the vocal prowess of Vanessa Freeman and Bembe Segue, the immaculately presented collection blends elements of Latin, jazz, disco and funk over a typically fusionist set. Opening with the gentle waves of 'Black Renaissance', the record bursts into life with the samba flex of 'Kowree Sambazzi'. Review: Ryo Fukui, one of Japan's most revered jazz pianists, takes centre stage in this re-pressed live performance, capturing the height of his artistic maturation at the 9th anniversary bash of Slowboat, the jazz live house he founded. At 56 years old, Fukui's playing is a stunning blend of power and delicacy, showcasing a balance of energy, technique, and depth that defined his later years. Accompanied by Kosuke Sakai on bass and Yoshito Eto on drums, the trio delivers electrifying renditions of pieces by Phineas Newborn Jr., Tommy Flanagan, and Wayne Shorter, all of whom had a significant influence on Fukui's style. The performance, now recaptured on its own 30th anniversary, not only reflects Fukui's fascination with greats, but captures his own distinct voice and voicings.

Review: For our money, XL Middleton is one of the best producers in the game right now. His ability to craft timeless funk and electro sounds that make you want to move your ass is second to none. Here he does just that with his remix of Hannah Warm's 'Just In Time.' It's defined by his usual sense of LA cool with squelchy synth bass, stepping street soul beats from the 80s and in this case a Japanese vocal that soars through a cloudless sky on a sunny day. Flip over this tidy 7" for the original version which is a pure city pop delight.
