Review: The legendary Roy Ayers has a wealth of great material to his name but Virgin Ubiquity: Unreleased Recordings 1976-1981 might just be the cream of the crop. It's packed with gold that fuses soul and funk, jazz and disco into a load of killer cuts that never got their own release. There are husky vocal tracks featuring Merry Clayton on "Oh What A Lonely Feeling," "I Really Love You" and "What's the T?", sensual soul stirrers from Carla Vaughn such as "Mystic Voyage" and "Together Forever" and of course liquid synths and rhythm sections underpinning each of the tracks.

Review: Far Out takes a second deep dive into the previously unheard early demos of Brazilian jazz-funk greats Azymuth, offering up more unpolished gems recorded during the years as one of Brazil's most sought-after session bands. Interestingly, much of the material is closer in tone and style to their subsequent releases, though some of the rhythms, solos and basslines are arguably a little wilder and more experimental. Highlights include the fizzing opener "Duro De Roer", the sweaty and percussive brilliance of "Bateria Do Mamao", the Blaxploitation influenced spy-chase madness of "Quem Tem Medo" and the surprisingly smooth "Manha", the demo that eventually earned Azymuth a recording contract.

Review: Before they found fame with their 1975 debut album, Azymuth divided their time between working as backing musicians (attending recording sessions with some of Brazil's top talent) and recording experimental home demos. Recently rediscovered, these demos are finally being given a release thanks to the efforts of Far Out chief Joe Davis. There's much to admire on this first batch (a second volume is also available) of previously unheard early recordings, from the high-octane Brazilian funk insanity of "Prefacio" and Jimmy Smith-esque "Melo De Cuica", to the spacey samba/jazz-funk fusion of "Xingo (Version One)" and the relaxed, slow-burn brilliance of seven minute B-side opener "Laranjeiras".

Review: Jim Black's Houseplant sees the progressive-jazz drummer continue to refine his signature style, a fusion of jazz and rock that's as quirky as it is inventive. While not a radical shift from his previous works, this 2009 release showcases Black's distinctive approach to drumming, blending complex rhythms with sly, punchy backbeats that keep the session lively. Backed by his longtime band Alas No Axis, Black delivers a sprightly set with guitarist Hilmar Jensson, whose polytonal riffs add texture, and saxophonist Chris Speed, who brings a smoother edge to the more intense moments. Tracks like 'Malomice' highlight the band's ability to shift seamlessly between acid-rock and jazz, with Speed's saxophone weaving off-kilter melodies over Black's precise, crashing grooves. The mood softens on introspective cuts like 'Elight,' where the musicians ease into more delicate, atmospheric territory. Bassist Skuli Sverrisson provides the glue, his limber playing driving the energy throughout. Houseplant is a masterclass in balancing catchy riffs with jazz improvisation, offering an intense but melodic exploration of jazz-rock fusion.

Review: Jazz fans are in for a real treat here as Blue Note unleash a never before heard studio album by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. It was recorded back in 1959 at the legendary Rudy Van Gelder's Hackensack studio and has Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt all playing as part of the recording. As the title suggests, it's a breezy, super cool record with seductive trumpets and icy drums all next to neat keys that encourage you to gently bop. After months of waiting, it proves more than worth all the anticipation.

Review: This is a special never before released live recording in mono and on heavyweight vinyl from Donald Byrd. In 1958 he moved to Paris for a residency to study with composer Nadia Boulanger. It gave occasion to a band coming together that has a formidable line up of Bobby Jaspar on tenor sax and flute, Walter Davis, Jr. on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Art Taylor on drums. This concert was played in the early evening at the one and only ever Cannes Jazz Festival in July 1958 and was dedicated to modern jazz sounds.

Review: Duke Ellington's Far East Suite, now reissued on 180-gram audiophile orange vinyl LP, is a noteworthy, though often overlooked, entry in Ellington's discography. Recorded in 1966, the suite reflects a time when jazz was tentatively exploring other cultures, with pieces inspired by the band's tour of the Middle East rather than the Far East. While not as celebrated as Black, Brown and Beige or Such Sweet Thunder, Far East Suite captures an intriguing phase in Ellington's career. Composed with Billy Strayhorn, the suite includes gems like Strayhorn's 'Agra' and Ellington's 'Tourist Point of View,' showcasing their enduring creativity even amid Strayhorn's health struggles. This reissue retains previously issued alternate takes and introduces five new ones, though it's hard to add to the original's brilliance. For newcomers, this is a splendid chance to experience Ellington's adventurous spirit; for longtime fans, it's a familiar but welcome revisit. Despite its misnomer and scattered themes, Far East Suite remains a testament to Ellington's enduring legacy.

Depending on your personal circumstances, the Covid pandemic was either a blissed-out paid holiday or a stressful and seemingly never-ending time of loss and hardship. Both ends of the spectrum are gorgeously captured here by London-based Joy Ellis, who wrote her third album 'Peaceful Place' during those strange weeks. Though a renowned singer, she decided to strip things back to just piano for this record, with long-time collaborators Adam Osmianski on drums and Henrik Jensen on double bass fleshing out the sound. It is a poignant listen from front to back, with all the many different emotions of that time conveyed perfectly, from grief to uncertainty, hope to despair, in one immersive record. The sheer beauty of these songs and the meaning of the melodies stay with you long after they have finished playing, making this a real triumph out of adversity and one that is sure to stand the test of time.

Review: .You'd be hard pushed to find a more lively collision of sounds than this one from Friends From Rio. The Brazillian outfit mixed up jungle funk, samba, Latin, soul and plenty more on their 2014 album Friends From Rio Project. 'Fogo No Chap (Fire In The Ground)' is one of the single rom it and here it gets an edit job by DJ Muro who draws out the good bits, lets the loose rhythms flow and gives plenty of room to the steamy wind leads. Flip over this fine 7" and you'll find another summer ready sound in 'Casino Bangu (Lembrancas Do Lincoln)' (feat Banda Utopia - DJ Muro edit) which is more percussive and just as vibrant.

Now granting us consumer gods a further 10 sacrificial offerings, 'Oh Death' is the pandora's box that contains every devil imaginable, from the kora-scrapings of 'Under No Nation' to the desert-blues drift of 'Passes Like Clouds'. The band's aim was to record a paean for an uncomplicated society without nations, borders or even transport; 'Oh Death' is a psychic return to peace.
