Review: Originally released in 1996, this track has long been a staple in the deep house canon and this 2025 reissue delivers a collection of the most iconic remixes alongside with a key fresh version. The track's timeless appeal is fully realised through a combination of classic and modern renditions. Side-A has one of the most important versions with the sublime Salt City Orchestra's Out There Mix, a deep house masterpiece with ethereal vocals, hypnotic basslines and an epic feel that makes it timeless as the day it was released. The Trevino Remix flips the track, introducing a more techy, peak-time energy with a rolling bassline that transforms the deep groove into an undeniable floor-filler. Side-B showcases two more versions, beginning with the Frits Wentink Mix, which strips down the track to its soulful essence, focusing on intricate percussion and atmospheric elements. The final track and newest version, the MIDGE mix, brings a new era to Mushrooms, blending modern house vibes with a touch of nostalgia while maintaining the original's soul while infusing a fresh tempo and atmosphere. Mushrooms remains as compelling as ever, proving its staying power in the house music world - and this reissue just proves once again, how in demand this track still is today.

Review: Who better to tell the story of house music than one of its main early protagonists? Marshall Jefferson penned plenty of Chicago's greatest early records and as a DJ helped lay the foundations for the sound too. As such he is a perfect choice for Defected's House Masters series and does a fine job of laying out some of its finest moments on this brilliant new mix. No matter how many times you hear these OG gems they still resonate, from the passionate vocals of Ten City to the iconic chords of 'Someday' via the darker jack of Jefferson under his Hercules alias this is an essential listen.
