Review: This is the first Suede release with a co-writing credit for guitarist Richard Oakes, who succeeded Bernard Butler. Oakes is on the b-side 'Together', while the a-side - the best track on Suede's iconic second album Dog Man Star - is credited to the legendary plankspanker Butler. 'New Generation' is a beautiful blend of Manic Street Preachers-esque rock with Bowie and T-Rex-esque glam - it's a perfect pop song. Singer Brett Anderson is at his hooky and melodic best here. Meanwhile, 'Together' takes a more Stone Roses-y blues rock direction and it's tougher with more bile, but still majestic thanks to the lush wall of sound that Suede do so well, whilst retaining their hard rock DNA.

Review: Imagine you're in for a long car journey and can only take one Suede album, which one do you take? Well, this is the one, really. Reissued as an expanded 3CD set, it features all their best b-sides from the hallowed first three albums (Suede (1993), Dog Man Star (1994) and Coming Up (1996), plus a further 19 B-sides and extra tracks from 1999 to 2023. It's the extra, latter day era numbers that are getting a standalone release on vinyl for Record Store Day as Sci-Fi Lullabies Vol.2, but with this CD set you get everything lumped in together as a bumper package. The tracklist is ridiculous: 'The Sadness in You, the Sadness in Me' from 2022 is a power ballad that could stir the most stoic of hearts. 'Another No One' is a slow, achingly beautiful and melancholy number and 'Europe Is Our Playground' - clearly written pre-Brexit - celebrates a golden Schengen era: "From Spain to Camber Sands/Europe is our playground."

Review: Suede's second album Dog Man Star is alleged to have defined an era; it is considered among many of their diehards as their most musically adventurous record; here, sweeping strings appose orchestral ballads; epic widescreen pieces contrast to, yet befit trashy glam rock. It includes the classic hit singles 'We Are The Pigs', 'The Wild Ones', and 'New Generation'; it's also cited as among their last records to feature guitarist and co-songwriter Bernard Butler. The record's assessment by the first-listen music press, specifically Rolling Stone, as "one of the most pretentious albums ever released by a major label" has likely worked in its favour rather than dashing hopes of greatness: the record's leftward face is mostly stylistic, and besides the flamboyant vocal delivery and sveltely polished mixes, amounts to one of the chicest of chic pop records out there.

Review: Hyped at the time as 'the Suede record Brett Anderson raps on' - in fact, it's more of a spoken word monologue - 'Stay Together' followed the Britpop instigators' hugely successful Dog Man Star debut album and pointed the way forward for future experimentation away from their core Bowie/glam flash rock. It remains their highest charting single having peaked at number three in the UK charts (an honour it shares with 'Trash') and here, part of Demon's Suede singles reissue campaign, comes backed another non album track 'The Living Dead'.

Autofiction is certainly a triumphant return for the mighty Suede, one of the most iconic of all UK indie bands who helped nurture the Britpop movement out of nappies and into big boy pants, and big boy record deals, during the early-1990s. Whether this is exactly the rebirth into a punk outfit some corners of the press would have you believe is another question.
Ultimately, LP number nine definitely feels like a change of tact, with Brett Anderson's voice taking on a new, grizzlier sound (albeit at times still erupting into the siren-esque tones we fell head over heels for first time round). On the whole, it would be far more accurate simply to label this outing as tougher, rawer and much less affected than the stuff we've had in the past.

Review: Suede's legendary self-titled album arrived in March 1993 and soon became a commercial and critical success. It also won the sometimes ill-fated Mercury Music Prize but that did nothing to hold the band back as the record hit the number one spot on the UK Album Chart. It is packed with classic singles such as 'The Drowners', 'Animal Nitrate', 'So Young', and 'Metal Mickey.' In its first week alone this LP sold some 100,000 odd copies which, at the time, made it the fastest-selling debut album ever in the UK. Review: In terms of landmark releases, you'd be hard pushed to find anyone that doesn't rank Suede's third as a seminal moment in their career.
