Review: Sparks' 1974 albums Kimono My House and Propaganda are reissued for their 50th anniversary. 1974 saw Sparks signed to Island Records and have chart-topping success in the UK singles chart with 'This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both of Us', lifted from Kimono My House. The album marks the time they embraced more pop-oriented songwriting and a shift towards glam rock. Propaganda, released a few months later, built upon that direction and reached the top ten in the UK. The man who signed them to Island, Muff Winwood (The Spencer Davis Group) produced these albums and proved himself to be a multi-talented dab hand in the studio as well as an effective force on the beat discovering the best artists of the 1970s. His foresight proving priceless as we're still listening to bands he's signed today.

Review: Given the erotic subtexts to many of his films, it clearly didn't take much to seduce acclaimed director Ingmar Bergman. But that was more than fine for synth duo Sparks, who by August 2009 had become so enamoured with the director's work as to theme a whole album around him. Imagining a hypothetical trip to Hollywood, the album hears the strange duo embark on a synthy rock-operatic odyssey across four sides and at least 20 tracks; their first to do so.

Review: Sparks are, of course, Ron and Russell Mael, a hugely prolific family twosome who have put out some 20 albums. Lil' Beethoven was their 19th and one in which they managed to find some of their better earlier form right on the turn of the millennium. It came in 2002 and builds in some classical influences to their usual sound with the single 'Suburban Homeboy'. The pop/rock aesthetic defines many tunes as the band rekindle their interest in art. This is one of the many albums BMG are reissuing this year including Balls from 2000, Hello Young Lovers from 2006, Exotic Creatures of the Deep from 2008 and The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman from 2009.
