On the edgier sounding flip, meanwhile, a female MC spits with impressive ferocity while a lovely warm - and somewhat familiar - analogue-edge loop works its magic. Both are key components for use at different points in the jam, some badly needed heavy weaponry that Donald Trump can't withdraw from service here.

Review: London's Mysticisms label spill valorous guts in issuing this new dub and breakbeat crossover record from Dub Specialists. Having emerged from te potent 1980s-90s fallouts that enshrouded the pioneering digital roots label Conscious Sounds, Dub Specialists tracked the storied meeting-of-minds that was and still is Douglas Waldrop, Piers Harrison, and Stuart "Chuggy" Leath. This time, the trio are heard teaming up with DJ Millie McKee and studio brain Matt Bruce to formate yet another splinter cell, as missionaries of Conscious Sounds' digital mission: to explore samplers and videogame sounds in dub and funk. Using an Atari 1040 running Cubase and armed with a Soundcraft mixer, this latest iteration hears drum loops and reggae basslines played over funk samples and layered with Petter's chords, crafting a series of short, DJ-worthy heaters. The result is unhindered by expectation and breaks many calcified digidub moulds, as on 'Funkin Dub', where speak n' spell garblings meet downtown funk licks and sonorant snare whacks.

Review: 70s and early 80s Jamaican producer Keith Hudson's approach to dub was never about smooth edges or easy rhythms. His productions are dense, disorienting, heavy with delay, bass and drums that sound like they're ricocheting down a well. The Soul Syndicate, his long-time studio band, provide the backbone hereideeply locked-in grooves that Hudson warps into something ghostly. 'No Commitment' staggers forward with stabbing guitar chops that seem to dissolve mid-strike, while 'Ire Ire' loops through warped vocal fragments and echo chambers that stretch into infinity. 'Bad Things' and its dub counterpart pull apart the rhythm until it feels skeletal, each hit landing in the empty space between delay trails. Hudson's use of reverb and tape manipulation isn't just about atmosphere, but about control as well. He shifts and reshapes the mix to turn steady rhythms into something unsteady, always shifting just out of reach. 'Desiree' drifts through flickering hi-hats and cavernous low-end, while 'Keeping Us Together' seems to slow down and speed up in the same breath. There's something darker, more claustrophobic in the way he structures space and silence. Even the brighter moments, like 'Mercy' with its open, rolling groove, carry an unease, as if the music itself is bracing for collapse. Hudson was an architect of mood, twisting familiar elements into something deeply immersive and strangely hypnotic.

Review: Across four artists and four versions, Original Gravity present 'Woolly Bully', a woollen repackaging of the longtime Sam Sham & The Pharoahs classic. Laid down in 1964, this terpsichorean prancer kept to a 12-bar blues progression, and made for the first American record to sell a million copies during the storied British Invasion. Its mixture of skiffly British rock and Mexican-American conjunto was an intentional blend, and a succesful one at that. Its enduring impact is now felt in these rollicking cover versions from Junior Dell, Donnoya Drake, Luchito & Nestor Alvarez and Curtis Baker, all roomy, costume vintage retrofits of the original. Listen closely to the lyrics for strange talk of a mythical creature: the original song's lyrics were so strange that some radio stations banned it for fear of popular befuddlement.

Review: Originally released as part of Dub Narcotic Sound System’s Dub Narcotic Disco Plate series, ‘Fuck Shit Up’ has stood the test of time as a raucous blend of garage soul punk. The track made waves upon its 1994 release, with its genre-defying energy gaining instant admiration from artists like Beck, Chemical Brothers, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (who later covered it), and Make-Up. “We loved this piece of ramshackle punk funk when we first heard it on 7” in 1994 and we still love it now!” said The Chemical Brothers in 2025. Still a staple at underground dance parties, the track has amassed over 100,000 YouTube streams, so for the first time, it’s now available digitally, paired with a fresh remix by Hifi Sean, best known for his work with Soup Dragons.

Review: After a long a post-COVID quest to repurpose his music as a vessel for healing, Richard Norris (The Grid, Beyond The Wizards Sleeve) tops up the fourth edition of his oracular, thinking-man's-dub Oracle Sound series. Volume 4 describes its the nine dub versions as "outernational, widescreen versions", and if by widescreen Norris means the stereo field, then this is realised with abundant clarity on the outset that is 'Connected Dub', on which ample effects riffle across a club-readied plod, as a knowing gravel-voice suggests a paternal spirit guide keeping watch over the reels. 'Earthsea Dub' continues, nodding to Ursula Le Guin's fictive planet through sloshing water FX and ticklish 808s, while the three closing 'Ceefax' bits take teletext retro-nostalgia headspaces to the extreme. Jon Carter's Guest Mix is a special closing freakout, one that could convey itself well even over copper wire, never mind the now ubiquitous fibre-optic.

Review: Roots Natty offers a treasure trove of rare tracks from one of reggae's favourite trios, The Gladiators. Recorded during the genre's formative golden era, from 1977 to 1979, the period proved fruitful for those in the orbit of reggae giants like Culture and Burning Spear, The Gladiators following among them. This battle-scorn group - Albert Griffiths, Clinton Fearon, Gallimore Sutherland, et al. - would wield piercing arrangements in reggae stadia from soundclashes to Kingston studios, complementing penetratively deep lyrics with sharper productions; long-tanged beats, atomic, needle-point drum transients. The majority of the tracks on Roots Natty are rare Jamaican singles, mixing rawer, heavier, dub-fusions than their Western-readied album counterparts. Originally released in limited quantities in Jamaica, these ones have been carefully remastered, preserving a relatively authentic energy.

Review: Japan's best covers outfit, Inokasira Rangers, once again scores another knockout in dub. This time the instrumental group have procured a jaunty Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong ballad and a Glen Campbell re-blend respectively. Both songs have been lent a warm, clear-cut rocksteady flavour, substituting trademark vocal lines for instrumental renderings (both originals contain bittersweet legatos and leaping intervals, and deal in themes of gratitude and nostalgia, making it an extra challenge for the Hammond and electric piano to replicate them). But the task is nonetheless won, and pristine clarity achieved!

Review: French (digi)-dub trio Stand High Patrol share two new cuts on their very own label, helping develop what it means to record a "dub cover". Harking back to Kingston, Jamaica, 1974, this triumphant dub triumvirate home in on a much-loved dub reggae cover, recorded by Lee "Scratch" Perry and national vocal icon Susan Cadogan, of Little Willie John's 'Fever', in turn a cover of Peggy Lee's 1958 hit original. With this record, the interpretive transmission chain is manifold: now Stand High Patrol offer their own cover, a rather measured take, in which bubbly basses and cold, static, unstressed Rhodeses hover above the vocal mix. The instrumental version, '39 -C Dub' is equally frigid but still moving, haunting.

Review: The connection between ZamZam and Feel Free Hi Fi was sparked by Bristolian Neek out in Portland and lead to an immediate bond forged over a shared sound and DIY ethos. Inspired by early digi-era dancehall and UK dub, the duo crafts a sound here that honours tradition while venturing into bold, idiosyncratic territory. It comes on their own Digital Sting label and opens with 'Voyageur' which is a mix of cinematic atmospherics with haunting synths that evoke wild and mythic landscapes. Review: Fourth Wave reissue one of the great works of Japanese composer, keyboardist and producer Hiroshi Sato. Forming part of a fresh flood of reissues that the label have explicitly mandated, Sato's are highlights among a discrete period of exquisitely recorded and visually designed LPs from the late 70s and early 80s. With a sleekly surreal cover artwork by Tadanori Yokoo - psych rock's pastiching answer to Vaughan Oliver - Sato brought chilled finger-flair to his various recorded synth patches, electric pianos, chamber brasses and guitars, all of which are recorded to produce a precise, razored sound in xpander-funk. Something latent - something much more - than mere smooth AOR is conveyed here. Perhaps it can be focalised in the LP's aura of effortless, disengaged mellowness, as if good comportment and style is an inevitability of life in cosmopolitan 80s Tokyo.

Review: Easy Star has a real doozy on its hands here with Off World, the third full-length album (and first on this label) from Flying Vipers. After ten years of instrumental dubwise reggae, the next chapter of the band has arrived with new addition Kellee Webb's soulful lead vocals adding depth to the Vipers' cassette-crafted sound. Flying Vipers record murky dub-inflected reggae on a Tascam 8-track in their basement bunker outside Boston, MA. Their love of Jamaican and UK 70's roots and dub is fully apparent but eclectic crates of records and a couple decades worth of DIY punk shows also bleed through. Brothers Marc & John Beaudette on drums and bass really lock-in with Zack Brines' layers of vintage organs and electric pianos in concise melodic meditations which means that Off World uses that foundation to explore "the fight or flight of contemporary survival."

Review: After a wonderful 2023 original, 'High On Your Love', Australian dubbing outfit the Springtones return with yet another amble through beaming dub. Heavily nuanced, the surround mix and FX palates are both especially tight on this one. Both sides on this gleeful, sunny-side-up sendoff make quick but respectful work of the Marvin Gaye original 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' followed by The Police's 'Walking On The Moon', with vocals on each brought back to life by Gayl and Noya respectively. The latter version is especially expansive, not least since the Police original had already taken after dub music for the original tracl. Extra reverberating, depth-charging and springing clearly needed doing in this case.
