Leaf rust workshop

Colleagues from the European network of labs studying wheat rusts came to discover key skills necessary to characterise wheat leaf rust populations.
Participants first learnt key steps in leaf rust handling and techniques for phenotyping infection types and classifying isolates within different races and families. They then took part in a visit of the lab facilities. Hands-on workshops in the afternoon were an opportunity to practice wheat inoculation, spore harvest and to train in scoring infection types and determining races from a differential set. The workshop was concluded by a hybrid meeting during which reports were presented on the latest wheat rust surveys conducted by various European laboratories.
