The 6th Congressional District of Michigan held an election for the U.S. House of Representatives on November 4, 2014. Upton was first elected in 1987 and last won re-election in 2012 over Mike O'Brien.

Incumbent Fred Upton (R) defeated Paul Clements (D), Erwin J. Haas (L) and John Lawrence (G) in the general election.[3] Cook Political Report rated the district as a "Safe Republican" win in 2014. Upton maintained a strong financial advantage over Paul Clements, who was a professor of political science at Western Michigan University. Furthermore, Upton improved his chances with his long tenure and relative popularity among conservatives in the district. Clements stated that he felt Upton had become too conservative in his views, as he original won the district as a moderate Republican. Moreover, Clements felt that could help swing voters his way since he described the district as a "moderate" area.[4]

Rep. Fred Upton, the incumbent, faced a primary challenge from Jim Bussler in the August primary. Upton easily defeated Bussler to seek his re-election in November general election. He faced challenger Paul Clements, a professor, in the general election. Clements ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Primary: A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Michigan utilizes an open primary system, in which registered voters do not have to be members of a party to vote in that party's primary.[5]<[6]

Voter registration: To vote in the primary, voters must have registered by June 7, 2014. For the general election, the voter registration deadline was October 6, 2014.[7]
