Marvin Charles Hamilton III was a superior court judge for the Fourth Judicial District in Bethel, Alaska.[1] Hamilton was appointed on March 5, 2007 by Governor Sarah Palin.[2] He passed away on April 9, 2011.[3]

2010 election

Hamilton was retained in 2010.[4] The Alaska Judicial Council supported his retention.[5][6]

Education

From 1985 to 1987 Hamilton studied at the University of Notre Dame, Kellogg Institute of International Studies and earned a Graduate Certificate in African Studies. In 1980 he received his California College Teaching Certificate in Philosophy and Theology from San Diego State University. Then in 1978 he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. In 1976 he received a Associate of Arts in Pre-Law and Court Management. In 1987 he graduated from Notre Dame Law School with a J.D.[7]

Career

From 1985 to 1987 he was the Co-Director of the Notre Dame Legal Aid and Defender Association. In 1986 he worked as a Summer Law Clerk for the ACLU Foundation-National Prison Project in Washington, DC. The next year in 1987 he did another Summer Law Clerkship, this time with the Capital Collateral Representative in Tallahassee, Florida. In 1987 he was hired by The Alaska Court of Appeals to work as a Law Clerk. He worked there until he was hired by The Alaska Public Defender Agency in 1988, he worked there as an Office Supervisor in Barrow and a Felony Trial Attorney in Anchorage. From 1991 to 1996 he was an Office Supervisor for the Federated States of Micronesia's Public Defender Office in Palikir, Pohnpei. In 1996 he was hired by the Palau Public Defender Office as the Chief Public Defender. In 2000 he began work as the Supervisor of Public Defender Offices in Ketchikan and Bethal. He worked there until his 2007 appointment to the superior court, where he served until his death in 2011.[7]
