On November 7, 2000, Debbie Stabenow won election to the United States Senate. She defeated incumbent Spencer Abraham (R), Matthew Abel (L), Michael Corliss (Green), Mark Forton (Reform), John Mangopoulos (U.S. Taxpayers) and William Quarton (Natural Law) in the general election.[2]
