Jan P. Patterson was a judge on the Texas Third District Court of Appeals, Place 4. She was elected to this position on November 3, 1998[1] and took office on January 1, 1999[2] Her term expired on December 31, 2010.[3][4][5]

Ethics complaint filed

Former state representative Glen Maxey filed a complaint against Patterson in November 2009, alleging that she made "substantive misstatements" regarding her search for an appointment to the 353rd District Court. In documents received via the Texas Public Information Act, it is known that Patterson wrote to Governor Perry requesting appointment to the 353 District, but Patterson suggests that she was approached by the Perry first.[5][6]

Patterson is the Vice-Chair of the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct, the agency with which the complaint was filed.

Education

Justice Patterson was born in Austin, Texas. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas and then her law degree from the U.T. School of Law in 1973.[4][2]

Career

Justice Patterson began her legal career as a clerk for a federal judge in New York City. She then joined the law firm Sullivan & Cromwell. After this, she became a federal prosecutor in New York. When she moved back to Austin, she continued to work as a federal prosecutor. She also worked as an adjunct and assistant law professor at the University of Texas and a deputy special prosecutor in a federal criminal investigation. She then worked as a private practice lawyer and was a shareholder of the firms Johnson & Gibbs and Sneed, Vine & Perry at the time of her election in 1998.[4][2]

Patterson was appointed to the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct by the Texas Supreme Court. Her term expired on November 19, 2013.[7]
